Low volume and distortion problem when turning on amp.
I have an SWR 750X head going into a Goliath Sr. I have owned this rig for about 8 years and I've never had problems with it. Lately when I first turn it on the volume is low and the signal is distorted. In order to fix this I have to turn up the gain really loud, lower the master and smack the strings really hard for the volume to return to normal and the fuzz to go away. Sometimes it goes back to normal right away and other times it could take a few minutes. Once the volume returns to normal it stays that way until I turn it off for a day or so and try to turn it back on again. Then I have to go through the same routine. Anyone have any idea what this could be? Thanks in advance
Have You tried a patch cord on the FX loop?
At least the old(er) SWR's tend to develope the symptoms You describe, with some additional crackling anyway, when the FX loop jack switches get oxidized.
Other causes may be cracked and/or cold solder joints on the potentiometers and jacks.
A temporary fix on either of the ones I listed can be done DIY style, but getting the head to a tech for a thorough diagnosing/cleaning/repair will most likely yield longer lasting results.
I have a Fender Bassman 150 that does that sometimes. No idea.
