low volume SVT CL, won't bias?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've had an SVT Classic for maybe 6 months, maybe a bit more. The past two practices, it's seemed very low-volume. Prior, it was insanely loud, now I've got the gain and volume almost all the way and it isn't loud enough for practice. I noticed the bias lights were on while playing, both green, both red. I tried to turn the bias knobs until they were no longer red... but it never worked, the right lights were always on. What's up with it?

RTM. Both on means bad tubes or bad bias controls. Translation - tech time.

It doesn't matter what your bias lights do while your playing.
Here's a link to the manual with bias-light setting instructions:

The lights aren't on unless I'm playing. They're just green.

The lights aren't lit unless I'm playing, which I found odd.

you said the lights are green when you are not playing? If so thats correct. You should turn on your amp let it warm up and turn the stand by off but bias without playing. If you turn turn the bias one direction no lights are on and if you turn it the other it will go from green to green and red. When you have only green lights without playing your good. If you have green and red regardless of adjustments you have a problem.

I think he said he has no lights unless playing, which indicates a low bias problem, or crummy crummy tubes..... Possibly the tubes were killed by a different problem in the amp..... OR maybe the bias is working, but the lights are NOT correctly working, in which case you can't bias it with them....

tech time or warranty return..... unless there is something we have not been told.

Hi.

GC doesn't have any kind of warranty on used items??

I find that hard to believe.

Another vote for tech time, because there's really nothing (exept for a new set of tubes) that You can do by yourself.

I wouldn't drop money on the tubes unless I was absolutely sure that the amp is all right, you may end up frying the new tube(s) as well.

Listen to Jerrold, he sure knows what he's talking about.

Regards
Sam

First thing to do is talk to GC and tell them the problem. At a minimum, they should test the tubes for you to confirm they are within operating parameters. If you can't do this there are a couple of things you can do yourself. Carefully remove the tubes and take them to a tech to test. This should not cost you anything or a small fee (remember, techs have families to feed).

If the tubes test fine, then reseat them and see if the problem persists. If you still have the problem and GC won't help, you either spend money to fix the problem or you have a very expensive paper weight.

I think GC only has a 30 or 45 day return window for used items that they sell. What a bummer.

You have to buy GC's used gear protection, which I didn't. It was like an extra 10% and I couldn't afford it. It was also 2 hours away, I found it used on their site.
