M9 settings thread

Sign in to disble this ad
I figured that I'd start a thread dedicated to M9 settings so that people who are looking for settings advice don't have to weed through pages of chat and info to find it. Who knows - It may even help out some experienced M9 users dial in their sound a little better. You can take photos of your M9 to show your settings , or just explain how you have them. I know that everybody has different tastes and different basses sound different though amps , but I figured that I'd start this thread so people with some time under their belts with the M9 can help out newbies (like me).

To start things off I am going through the M9 mega thread and copying and pasting some settings and advice that people have posted in there - and of course giving due credit for the info. It may be a little time before I make it through the entire thread because my free time is very limited.

Please feel free to post your settings , give advice on the EQ , if you use the "Pull Deep" feature or not , and how you have the compressor set - or if you don't use the compressor at all.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help out.
Sincerely , Pedulla-Player

Chefs settings

Here are Chef's settings and advice from the M9 thread:

For all in-tents and porpoises, I run mine more or less flat.
On voice 3 ("flat") I'll boost treble a hair, cut mids a hair, and leave bass alone.
On voice 2 (bass and treble boost) I'll cut bass and treble a hair, and boost mids a hair.
GEQ I use for problem bass/cab/room flaws.
Compressor I generally have set at 9 oclock on both, but if the bass seems out of proportion to the rest, I'll up the ratio.

I generally run input gain between noon and one, and master at about 9 oclock.
I never ever use the active pad, even with very hot basses, and this holds true on my Walkabout as well.

I bounce back and forth between voice 3 with a bit of mid cut, and voice 2 with a bit of mid boost.
GEQ I use to tweak from this cab to that, this bass to that, or crummy room issues.
Comp I have set, more or less at 9 and 9.
On voice 2 (yes, that's a bit of mid scoop, and adds a bit of bright) I tend to cut a little bass, either by the bass control, or the GEQ, or a little of both. It's a big voicing.

Thanks Chef!

lomo's Settings suggestions

Here are some settings suggestions from lomo:

For me, eq settings depend on the bass and room, but flat gets the nod most of the time. I use the graphic eq as a boost function by bumping mids-I kick it in during the occasional fill. I leave the comp settings both at about 10 o'clock most of the time. Gain between 10 and noon, depending on the bass-that keeps it pretty clean. YMMV.

Thanks lomo!

Advice to me from KsPiNeSh - M9 and Uber 410

When I decided to exchange the Titan for the M9 and trade in the PH412 for a Uber 410 I give a hats off the KsPiNeSh for helping me with the decision. He told me well they compliment each other and even sent me links to some of his recordings that played through the M9 / Uber410 on. They sounded great! Thanks again KsPiNeSh! I hope that he doesn't mind that I am going to share his message to me on this thread when I Pm'd him and told him that I went for the M9 / Uber 410 combo. - Here it is:

Hey man - I think you'll really dig this pairing, especially once your Uber loosens up and breaks in I really like the Pull Deep switch... I feel like it adds a lot of girth and extension to the sound (which is what it's supposed to do). I also really like the compressor and use just enough to control the added low-end extension. The voicing of the Uber really compliments the very slight mid-dip inherent to the Carbine, which to my ear gives a very even, smooth sound.

Beyond that, I would say to not be afraid to play around with ALL of the settings. The amp sounds great set flat, so everything else beyond that is cake Have fun!

My thanks goes out to KsPiNeSh for steering me towards a great amp / speaker combination! I just wish I decided to go this route in the first place - Would have saved me a little money. I am not complaining though - The music store that I deal with was more than fair with me - I am actually very pleased with the deal.

rockstarbassists settings (at the moment)

rockstarbassist's settings:

I'll hafta take a look, but as long as I've had this amp I've left it 12/10/12 for B/M/T and the Compressor on, both Th/and Ratio at about 10:00, and I think the settings were about-
-2 cut @ 33
even @ 80
+2 bump @ 150
even @ 300
+1 bump @ 600
+1 bump @ 900
even @ 2k
-1 cut @ 5k
-2 cut @ 8k

It's not perfect, but it's getting there. The @900 and 2k give me the attack I need while playing pickstyle yet not overbearing like I had before, which was basically a "reverse smiley face" peaking at 900 to really dial in that grind, but we just did some recording and while it "cuts" like I want, the fundamental isn't there and for hard rock my guitards really have an even tone so they don't dip into uber-low freq's so I can add in the beef and not really clash. Plus on two of our new songs I'm back to doing fingerstyle so that previous EQ setting wasn't really playing nice with fingers.

Voice is "flat", at 3. I think the manual has it right in that if you try and use the Voice and EQ together, it can get kinda funky and those are the results I was getting.
I do like Voice 2 for slower, fingerstyle stuff. Now we have all of our amps and stuff in one big rack so I don't switch it any during a show, but previously I'd switch off the G-EQ and swap the Voicing for a few tunes then back to normal but this is fine right now.
And yeah the comp settings are b/c 1. I use a pick 90% of the time, 2. we downtune, and 3. I use my low B (tuned to A) a lot so this just helps keep things a little tighter. I kinda wish the M9 had more footswitchable features like the M-P600 and Titan V12. Mute, G-EQ, Compression, FX-Loop would be easy enough, I'd think. I could live w/out Voice but that would have been even more killer.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
rockstarbassist's pick settings:

So I started messing w/ the Voicings last night, and clicking off the graphic EQ and clicked on the Compressor just to get some different tones out of it.

And, man, wow. I normally think onboard preset stuff like this is kinda hokey, but dang it really does work. I have the compressor w/ the Threshold at about 9 and Ratio at about 11 and the Voicing on 4, and it just kills for a pickstyle attack! Gives me more of the natural "crunch" I was looking for.
Also voicing 2 w/out the compressor for slower fingerstyle stuff is just brutal. Big, fat, deep and wide. Awesome.

Luckily I don't need to switch Voicings really in-song, but I'll for sure be running back to the amp and switching that in-set depending on the tune. This amp continues to deliver. And I'm considering starting to use the Active switch on the input, as well . Otherwise I can't get the amp to actually get hot and work since the Master through my dual PH212 setup stays at about 9:30...

************************************************** ************************************************** ************************************************** ************************
I basically use mine like a 2-channel amp, one for fingerstyle and one for pick (of which I do about 20/80%, respectively) with engaging the Graphic EQ for a real high-mids attack and snarl around 900-2k, and the Voicing at flat, and then for fingerstyle I click that off, and use Voicing 2 which gives it a big fat wide sound that's a lot more supportive and punchy. My Spector sounding awesome with either style doesn't hurt, but yeah- the punch on Voicing 2 is just killer especially through my modular PH412 stack.

I messed with Voice 4 a little, but it's too extreme for me, as it's in the same "vein" as how I have the Graphic EQ set anyway, with the boosted mids but mine is "sweeter" IMO and sounds better overall.
But yeah, 2 and then my G-EQ settings on this = total /win.
************************************************** ************************************************** ************************************************** ************************

Hey rockstarbassist - if this info is out of date let me know and I'll delete it or update it to your currnet "pick playing" stats.
Thanks!

Advice from bikeplate

Here is some advice from bikeplate:

I use the flat setting and take advantage of the graphic eq. Id try this first, see if you get what you like. I dont use the compressor. I use my Demeter compressor instead

Comment from chef about the Active Switch

Here is a comment from chef about the active switch:

**************************************************
I think you'll find the active setting does "bad things to tone."

IMO, it kills a lot of the "lively" about the M9 tone.

Course, maybe that's a benefit, sometimes, for some.
**************************************************

Hi chef - Are you saying that you leave the M9 set to "passive" even if you are playing an active bass?? Just want to clarify what you are saying??

Thanks as always! You advice and knowledge is greatly appreciated!

Here is some advice from Crabby on voicings.

Here is some advice from Crabby on voicings:

I find I really like the sound of the amp on voice 3, the flat setting when playing through my PH412 but I recently picked up a PH410 and the number 2 setting is simply amazing with the punchier and snarlier 410 cab. The 2 voice adds some deep smooth low end and takes out just enough mids that the tone isn't scooped but has a modern bright and deep character. What a machine!
