Making a Crate KX15 sound like a BX15
Picked up 2 small Crate amps last weekend: a BX-15 and a KX-15. Looking for schematics for both.
The KX-15 is a keyboard amp. The main difference between the it and the BX is that the KX has 2 inputs and 2 volume controls. Otherwise look identical, and both have the 4 band EQ (low, low-mid, mid, high).
In terms of tone, the KX seems a little more nasal than the BX, but I haven't really cranked it up yet, or torn either apart to see what the differences are.
Would like to compare the schematics for both BX and KX, and mod the KX to whatever spec/parts the BX used. Assuming both have same speaker, and based on TDA2030 chip, I'm guessing the differences will come down to caps and resistors. I'm comfortable modifying circuits; just looking to do some research before I get started.
Also, appears ports on these things are just a hole sawn into the front... no port tube. Where can I get a port tube for these things?
Purpose of these things is to use for a church gig, where I'm competing for volume with 1-2 acoustic guitars in 2 smallish rooms. They're perfect for what I need, were cheap, and appear indestructible. Any help appreciated.
Can't help You with the schematics, I wouldn't get my hopes up for finding any either.
Since You have the both amps, it should be very easy to compare them though.
Without modeling the driver, it's impossible to tell whether the baffle port is adequate for that application or not.
It probably is.
If You want/like, you can calculate the box tuning ATM, and using that same tuning as a baseline calculate a tube style port.
With flarings or without.
If You don't hear any scuffing now, the tube won't do much.
If You don't want to change the driver(s), a signal generator and rice will help you to determine the free air resonance of the current driver(s).
That'll help you in the desicion and calculations.
