Making My Own fEarFul Impulse Response?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I'm the VERY proud owner of a fEarFul specced 15/6/1 cabinet. It takes everything I throw at it and sounds incredible. I'd really like to use it for some solo recording that I'm going to be doing but unfortunately, I'll be doing most of it and the middle of the night and won't exactly be able to crank it like it ought to be cranked!

I do most all of my recording direct and use various amp simulators, analog modeling EQ's, fancy software compressors and limiters, etc. on synths, bass, guitar, vocals, and anything that needs processing. I always use bass cabinet IR's but naturally, there isn't a single one out there that really sounds anything like my cab.

I would be thrilled to have an IR of this little monster but I'm not sure where to begin. For one, I have decent but definitely nowhere near top of the line hardware. Additionally, I don't really have access to a proper space to do this.

Does anyone know just how sexy your hardware has to be to do this properly and what kind of room you need? Does anyone here have the facilities to this properly? I think I'd be willing to loan my cabinet out top someone who did and would DEFINITELY make the IR available for any and all talkbass members.

Lightbulb Well!

Unless you need 2000 takes to get you to the middle eight why not book a real studio and forget IR. There are loads of brilliant designed acoustic spaces crying out for work these days, some with very experienced engineers charging incredibly low rates with awesome gear, you will find them listed under recording studios.
You already own the sound you want to record after all.
Perhaps the IR you wish to make would really benefit from a truly great sound before you stick it up your convolver.
In my experience, Those that specialize in bedroom DIY recording, usually use the same technique with sex.

I wouldn't probably worry about it too much. Your direct tone probably sounds a lot like the fEarful, as much that most folks couldn't tell the diff.

IR are great for cabinets that have wild frequency response curve and resonate at different frequencies. Guitar bodies also.

There are articles on this site on how to capture impulses.

IR are great for cabinets that have artifacts link honking and vibrating. These cabinets have through one way or another become a familiar sound in music.

A fEarFul impulse would be rather uninteresting as the cabinet and driver combination have no artificial artifacts. What goes in is what comes out. They're good hifi cabinets. Like a good set of headphones. Just a little shelving EQ is all you need.
