+1 in that there are quite a few LMII/III users that use some sort of preamp pedal or additional preamp as an additional tonal component of a rig. Pretty nice, since you have a relatively neutral platform in the LMII/III, plenty of power for most cabs and most users, and you can run a preamp or pedal into the effects send and still have use of the tone controls (so almost the same as between bass and amp). Lots of guys using Tonehammers or VT pedals like this to grunt up the tone.
Kind of the same logic of using an active on-board preamp into an amp.... in some cases, it can add just that bit of difference to get everything exactly where you want it!
However, +1 to your other point also, that if you are using an expensive, full featured preamp, you might as well get a PA power amp for the cleanest, clearest, most transparent preamp to power amp link. That little 800 watt Demeter power amp seems a perfect solution for many who want a component system, but not necessarily a full size rack sort of rig.
