Markbass cmd 121p or gk 700 rb II

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently picked up a cmd 121p from GC, and have been pleased so far. I have been reading around though wondering if I made the right decision, considering the price tag. I have the opportunity to get a used gk 700 rb II in good condition at a good price. If I return the markbass and get the gk, which cab would work best in the five to six hundred range? Should I keep the markbass combo? Thanks.

Having owned a ton of GK in the past and some markbass now I would keep the CMD 121P combo as I have one and couldn't be happier. Now that said the GK will give you some grind if that's what you like but the markbass will be cleaner and a little warmer imo.

Have you played with it with the band yet? If it sounds good to you and mixes well with the other instruments, why keep shopping? If you go with the head and need a cab to go with it, thy can really open another can of worms. Every cab brand sounds different, and every different speaker (size configuration) has a different tone. I loved that combo when I played through it, I got nothing but compliments and inquiries about it. I just didn't prefer the piezo tweeter sound (vs horn) so I reluctantly let it go.

If you're married to the idea of a single cab, I would suggest a GK Neo 212-II - 4 ohms. If you're open to the idea of two cabs, for a more modular approach, then get (2) GK Neo 112-II cabs - 8 ohms each.

The GK 2x12 is right in your budget sweet spot. The dual 1x12s will be a little pricier, but arguably worth the extra cost.

There's definitely a difference quality in the midrange between them. The markbass has a much stronger and sweeter midrange presence, whereas the GK can sound a little flimsy in the mids... which is one of the reasons GKs are beloved by so many people who cut their mids or slap.
