MarkBass LM Tube800 - Too Much Power? & Aesthetics

Sign in to disble this ad
Any words of advice with regards to the MarkBass LM Tube800:

1. I'm thinking the MB LM T800 so I will have the extra headroom when/if needed. However, how does YOUR MB LM T800 sound when you're playing a small room and only need to turn the master to 2-3? In this scenario, when you're not pushing the amp at all, does it lack the sound that it might generate when you turn the master to 12:00+? Is the "sweet spot" on this amp the same at 2, as it is at 5, as it is at 8?

2. As far as aesthetics go, from the pictures I've seen of this head, or any other lightweight head, I don't LOVE the look of the little tiny box sitting on top of a 104 (for example). On the same token, it looks kinda silly sitting in the bottom middle of a 3 rack case as well. Anybody feel the same way? What have you done to create a better look, or do you just have to go to the MoMark for better aesthetics?

Thank you,

Hoss

I don't find that solid state heads have a volume 'sweet spot' in the same way that a tube amp does. A tube amp has some very real effects based upon what you're feeding the power tubes and how they react to being driven harder and hotter. Solid state not so much.

I find Markbass heads sound the same at ANY volume, no real sweet spot because you are NOT dealing with tube power sections which can growl and get more compressed as you turn them up.

Aesthetics of Markbass heads - I have heard many people do not like the look of Markbass gear. The color is definitely noticeable, but I think it would be quite dumb to buy another amp head because you think it looks better. Are you looking at the bass head while you are playing your bass? How about looking at your bass, the cute/hot women at the shows, or your band mates? If it sounds good, play it and love it.

I have to admit that I am not too fond of the Mark Bass livery. The only one I liked the look of was the gold tone Signature model, and that looked like an Eden product.

That said we are interested in how the amp sounds and how it looks should be of little concern. Try the amp. If you like how it sounds buy the thing! How many other folk, apart from other bass players, will even notice???
