Markbass LM800 - berg ae210 or mesa ph 410?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have the lm800, currently borrowing a cab, looking to buy one. Based on what I've read, tried, and what is available used locally, narrowed it down to berg ae210 or Mesa ph 410. Both mint, come with covers. Berg is $725, Mesa is $800.

This will be for bar/club gigs, usually not mic'd but if necessary PA support will be available. I play a Marcus miller jazz 4 and a p-bass, classic rock/new rock/blues covers.

I'm leaning to the berg due to weight and also because so many others pair mb heads with berg cabs and notice great results.

What are your thoughts?

I'd go with the Mesa simply because they retain resale value well. They are also road dogs. I've never had an issue with Meas gear aside from weight. The PH 410 is a monster cab too. I plan on getting one this year if my work holds out. The other one I would consider is the PH212. It sells new for about $750 or so. I once spent a whole afternoon at guitar center trying every amp and cabinet in multiple combinations. The PH212 and PH412 were the standouts. The GK neo 212 was a good one too.
Do you play a lot of gigs with stairs? because the 410 is about 90lbs. not impossible to move on your own, but I'd want help!

Brand aside, you're comparing 2 10's to 4 10's. The 410 will win every time, as far as output goes. A 210 by itself is not enough for many of us, me included. A 410 will cover just about anyone.

Depends on how much air you need to push. I gig regularly with an AE210 and rarely have a complaint. No way I'd ever haul around a Mesa 410 - just ain't gonna happen for me. Berg retain their resale value probably better than Mesa as far as I can tell. If it is $725 used that just illustrates the point - they are $799 new. On gigs where I'm worried about pushing more air I toss an AE112 underneath, but truth be told I've never really needed it. Totally depends on your gigs though. I just know that the Bergs sound great (I've never been a fan of Mesa cabs - ymmv), and at 40lbs with a thin front/back distance they are easy to schlep. And if you eventually get a pair, you can run them vertical for a great stack.

the mesa for the above reason. i used to have a markbass lmII that a ran through a markbass 210 and it really only sufficed for really small electric gigs or acoustic gigs. I am an ampeg guy but i really like the mesa stuff too. Their cabs are really impressive IMO. I just played a mesa M3 carbine 112 combo and i was very impressed with the depth and clarity of the 112. Great bass too. really has me reconsidering why i am dragging my 410hlf around for gigs that it is pretty much overkill for.

Same for me . I've used 210 cabs (Eden 210XLT) at gigs before and although it worked well there were some gigs that the 210 just couldn't quite cut it volume wise . I'd at least go for a 310 or 212 to make sure you aren't pushing things too far . That Mesa would be perfect for that but heavy to haul around .
