Markbass LMK II vs GK MB500 tone and reliability

Sign in to disble this ad
I currently own a Markbass LMK II and and looking for a micro amp that will give me some type of overdrive. I'm wondering about the GK MB500 and if it can produce a overdrive/type of distortion. I'm also wondering if all the bigs have been worked out of the GK because seems they have had some issues with reliability.

The GK does not produce any kind of overdrive or distortion. The Boost control does add some kind of grit or growl. It is hard to explain what it is, but it is obvious when you hear it. But, I would go so far as to call it overdrive, much less distortion. I love the tone of GKs, but the "issues" they have had with the MB2-500 scare me away a little bit. Plus, if you are looking for overdrive from a GK (other than the 2001RB or Backline 300) or, you are likely to be disappointed.

If you want a micro with a some OD/distortion, the ShuttleMAX series from Genz Benz is probably your best bet. They actually design their tube preamp in a way that allows you to push the tube into overdrive without sending a clipped signal to the power section. However, another idea would be to get a Tech 21 VT Bass pedal, which can be used to emulate the tube distortion of an SVT head, and run that in front of your Markbass. Even some die-hard tube snobs (I use this term affectionately) on here have been surprised at how convincing the tones you can get from that pedal are.

Those two brands have different tone characters. The G-K can get nasty if you crank the input gain with the master lower. It is a MUST for you to try them on your own (including the GB). The sound in your head just can't be related on the Internet.

I think a pedal might be cheaper

+1. And there are plenty of pedals that do this well.

The Little Mark Rocker 500 was designed specifically for this!
It's in production now, and will be available within the next couple of months.

Does it have a foot switch to operate the tube overdrive? If not it should be added.

nope, no footswitch. and i have to agree...these things are much easier to be able to use both clean and dirty sounds on a gig with a footswitch. still, even without it, it looks like a hot little amp.

I personally use my old DOD FX50-B overdrive pedal in front my LMII and I'm very happy with the tone. There are a TON of choices these days when it comes to overdrive pedals. Seems like the Tech 21 VT Bass pedal in front of Markbass amps gets a lot of love here on TB and a affordable alternative to buying another micro amp.

The Little Mark Rocker 500 sounds great to me, the only sample I could find:

I really love the feature packed TC Electronic RH450 with the built in TubeTone knob. Although one of the more expensive micro heads out there.

+1 to what Double Agent said regarding the boost feature on the MB2-500, it doesn't really create an overdriven tone. I actually don't even use it. Definitely go with a stomp box option. Cheaper, options are many and you can maintain your Markbass tone if you like it. Somebody else already said it, the GK MB has a very different tone than the Markbass. I find I can get just what I like, andci can get a nice variety of tones.

As far as the technical glitches/issues folks have mentioned, I have gigging probably almost every weekend (perhaps 3X monthly) for about 6 months without a single issue.
