Markbass players, do VLE & VPF have an effect on brightness?

There is another band practicing in our space, and it looks like I'll be using their bass player's amp when we rehearse. He's got a CMD 102P with a MB 1x15 bottom.

I'm looking for a bright, bouncy mid-'60s country tone but didn't get very far dialing one in, since we were auditioning drummers yesterday. I didn't mess with the VLE or VPF, since I don't really know what they do. Are those controls the key to getting a bright tone?

TIA
