Markbass sd800 for 2 NY 604's?

Sign in to disble this ad
I originally wanted to put my LMK II on 2 NY121's for a cool mini stack but was worried about the low end on that. Then I saw a picture of an sd800 on top of 2 NY604's. I read in to the 604's and it seems as though they are a better option for bigger bass. Can this rig do reggae? How big does this mini rig sound?

Subscribed. I'm curious about this cab as well as I've been considering pairing one with my Jeff Berlin combo.

I believe TBer Vic has checked out a pair of these cabs. You might want to PM him.

I guess I can comment that the SD800 does have a deeper, wider low end than some of the other Markbass amps, so that would probably be a positive for you, given the tone you are trying to achieve. I didn't really find it any louder at 4ohms than my LMII, but it sounded quite different... deeper low end, and a much brighter upper mid profile. I didn't dig it much, but it might yin yang with the little multi 6 boxes nicely.

However, every review of these cabs describe them as very mid punchy (Bass Player review, etc.). I would not think these cabs would really pump out the low end.

From the formular most use on the Phil Jones cabs of approximately four of the little 5" drivers roughly equaling the output of a good quality single 10" driver, my guess two of these cabs would sound like a tight, punchy 2 x 112 stack.

Do you have PA support?

I've used my LMIII and one 604 in many different applications.

Coffee house, no PA.
Small + med bar/club (it held it own against two guitards with 4x12s) PA for vocals only.
Large Show, excellent PA support for all (as on stage monitor)

Hard Rock show on big concert hall stage (guitards were cranking) - this show it didnt hold its own, but I didnt have the speakers pointed at my head. two cabs might have done the job...

I might be different than the average bass player, my tone chasing is focused on signal chain / preamp sound sculpting. Once the signal gets to the EQ section and Speaker cabinet, chances are Im the only one who is going to hear what it sounds like as I have already sent the preEQ signal to the board. I love my NY604, mostly because Im sick of lugging gear around

I finally got to try a 604 recently, I didn't crank it too loud but I was mighty impressed with it! Two would be great.

I ABed an LMII and a SD800 into the little MB 2x10 cab and big 1x15 cab on a number of occasions as well as with the 604 cabs, prior to my purchasing an LMIII.

I could not tell a difference between bottom, EQ, compression/limiting, or loudness between the 800 and LMII. Go figure.

I would say if you like the LMII, stick with that and try the 604's.

I ended up going with the Shuttle 9.0. Just a different animal.

I A'/Bd the 604 with a Markbass NY 121 today. The 604 blows the 121 away. I cranked both up because I was there to buy. It sounded huge while the 121 sounded stressed. Finger style the notes were clearer and brighter while the slap sound was very defined. Too bad they didn't have one new in a box and the sales guy did not agree with me to price the demo as a used cab or I would've walked out with it.

Thanks gomeztool.i have played the 121 before as well and I too felt that is sounded a bit stressed, but that was the combo 121. I think that I finally have a chance to go check that 604 out tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be pleased and I can get rid of the bulky 104hf!

I visited another GC and the manager and the rep there was willing to price the demo 604 as a used cab. This particular GC also had a lot of lightweight 115s including the Acoustic NEO model, which to my surprise, is a very nice sounding cab. After more A/Bing against the 115s I decided that I'd rather have the portability over the gain in low end. Not that the 604 is a slouch in putting out the lows. In fact there are many comments here about how the little cab can put out the bass.

At home I like the effect that the 604 added to my gigging rig (CMD 121P). It is very transparent. My rig still sounds like the way it always sounded except with more bottom with the 604 never calling attention to itself.

I'm bringing my what is now a mini rig of doom to a church band audition on Tuesday. I think it will blow their socks off.

Can't wait to read what you think about the little thunderbox.

I run a NY604 cab with a 500 watt 112 cab and 1000 watt rack while it isn't loud cab it has definitely opened up my sound a lot more. I want to upgrade to 804 cab at some point. Didn't blow me away on it's own but with another good cab it's pretty killer. I'm loving the sound I have right now.

You had to mention that 804 didn't you? GAAAAAS

ETA: Markbass is pretty close to their published weight. My 604 weighs 37#

I've gigged a pair (up until recently I had three) and they have an abundance of low end stacked. I prefer my EA VL 110s and Bag Ends so I'm selling mine.

The LMII easily pushes the stack.
