I've been using marshall 1960B cabs on and off for years and love the tone I get with them. they don't do antything past about 70Hz that well of course, even though they don't scrap out either. I'm haveing a hard time find four EV12L's to suff in there. I can get some JBL K120's though, I'm just wondering if anyones tried this, am I nuts? |

I just talked to a speaker guy and he told me to avoid JBL's except for the 2204. looks like I'm on the hunt for some EV12L's. |

2204/2206 is very good for bass but in a sealed 4 X 12 cab?.
They would be far better in a well designed ported enclosure.
Randy Rhodes used to use Altec 417's in Marshall 4 X 12's
They have very good tight bass on them but no small sealed 4 X 12 Is going to really flap your trouser legs no matter what's in it.
PS the Altec 417 weighs in at 17 lbs per driver, I don't think the JBL or EV is too far short of that weight either. |

Secondly the EVs and JBLs were great speakers - in their time. There are so many better options with modern drivers.

I'm not looking for pant flap, I have other cabs for that. the G12T-75's in it now are almost perfect, they just won't give me that tiny little bit more bottom I'm looking for. |

Paul | well name some then, that is the point of the thread.
I realize a marshall 4x12 is considered a bunk bass cab by modern standards. I like the tone I get from them though and honestly it destroys the hartke 4x10 I use to own, that cab was utter garbage, the aluminum cones would crack just looking at them. I'd like to find a Peavey 4x12 TVX, I hear good things about them. anyway I'm completely done with 4x10's and only want 4x12's now.

Even if I did I could not in all conscience recommend a driver to install into an inadequate cabinet. I too liked the Marshall 4x12 sound. But i last used one in the late sixties/very early seventies. That was with a 50W amp! With todays amps it's just not going to be a good cabinet.

i have a V4 cab loaded with 4x12 Eminence 2512's and it sounds great with an SVT head, (but i still actually prefer the sound of K120's). |

Randy Rhodes put them in 4 X 12'S and sounded like the ice pick from hell with a sm 57 but stick a good old RCA 44 ribbon or even a royer 121 in front and "bobs your uncle" instant Ozzy.
I actually slightly prefer the later Black Magnet 417H series 11 it had higher handling and the extra copper in the voice coil seemed to tame the ice pick top end off the ally center cap down to a more K120 like clang.
I use a series two in old Tannoy I12 four port array cab.
power soaked with a motherload I have another I12 cab with an old Fender CTS square ceramic in as a combination with the right mics and pres I get the guitar sound from hell.
I don't think the K120 is that dark either, I love them to bits too but they seem to be best in Large 2 X 12 ported floor monitors to get any real bass out of them. Here are a pair of mine in my drum room:
I thought your use of E120 voice coil caps on eminence drivers in your ampeg 4 X 12 to be a fooking genius idea, I know Bill will tell us that it only sounds like your strings are a couple of gigs newer on axis.
but I don't place microphones off axis so I don't give a bugger. |

Mind you, I'm not sure what enclosures these are (I want to say Ampegs) and may be larger than the 1960B.
I've looked at buying one of those Southbay speakers 68 TALL 412s, and putting in something like the EV12Ls. They're a bigger cab, and might work a bit better for bass.
On another note, I've played my Bassman 300 through a Marshall 1960B, at lower volumes, and paired with a 15", it was killer. I'd love to use a 2x15+4 or 612 rig at some point.

Available with paper or aluminum domes.
They also produce a "California 12" made to sound like a D120F.
