Marshall Experience ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all,

I was recently reading up on how one of my favourite bands managed to get their incredible distortion tones on one of their latest albums, and after hunting through a couple of websites, I found a place where the guitar player went on record saying that they used a JCM800 DSL to run a Guitar, Bari Guitar, and Bass through to get the distortion on almost the entire album. My question is, does anyone here have any experience running a bass through one of these amps ? It sounds Gnarly on the particular recording, but I'm just wondering what people have to say on this.

Cheers !

Lightbulb Yup!

I have a original JCM 800 with Andy Sneep gain mods and a DSL 2000
with fat stack mods. But I tend to use a vintage Matamp with a tube screamer for dirty bass recording because the Marshalls pre amps get too filthy in the low end and a tube screamer is cleaner down there.
Another cool tool I use for dirty bass is the old Mesa boogie studio pre amp with a Joe Meek VC 6 compressor on the input for a di'd dirty sound.
Its often just as good in the mix as a mic on a cab for re-amping clean stuff that needs filthying.

i never used to like marshall amps, but ever since getting my tech 21 british pedal modded by www.putnamguitars.com, i am thinking i might have missed the boat with them. i totally love the sound i get running the british through my svt. if i were in the market and i could get one for a reasonable price (a little tough these days), i'd get one.

This is awesome information, just the expert I needed ! Now, when you say too filthy, do you mean your notes get to the point where they're almost inaudible, or is it just like really really fuzzy but still with some definition ? What kind of cabs do you run these through ? I think the whole tube screamer Idea is pretty nifty too, I'm not familiar with how this reacts on bass guitars ?

Anyone else with info on any of this, please step in ! I welcome your information on amp dirt with open arms !

Often we need to use a dirty amp with less low freq dialed in and a clean tone with a lot of low freq for best definition the original tube screamer is good because it pushes the upper mid forwards as you increase the overdrive and still leaves the low frequency end with less overdrive.
lots of people complain about not having a lot of low with the old tube screamer but when you are making complex mixes with loads of low
from keyboards and downtune guitar, it can be a very good sound cos if you think there isnt enough low end you just bring up the di clean with a low pass filter set at about 150hz and have good definition where the dirty sound is getting boomy and overly resonant if you have a lot of low mid and bass in it.
Speakers wise we use various types depending on the band and the tuning for thrash and hardcore punk I love the old Acoustic 408 cab
because it sounds just like a building collapse in C sharp with loads of hard driven tube amp and the boss Bass overdrive. But more recently we have used old metal badge Ampeg 115's with altec 418 series two alnico speakers, because I like the on axis metal dust cap thing.
Modern clean 5 string rock bass I like the Eden LXT 8 X 10. for Blues Rock 4 string in E the old CTS driver'd Ampeg sealed 8 X 10 always sounds dead right. We also have a few 1X12 test cabs with various odd drivers in that I use power soaked in another smaller deader room
for Punk POP and stuff that needs a dryer space without too much
sub. Its all horses for courses really there is no best bass cab for everything thats why I have to find space for about twelve of the buggers.

Thats the song in particular I've been into most from the album with all the distortion. The whole collection of 4 CDs are pretty fantastic though.

Wow. Not bad at all. I wrote "Thrice" off a while ago. I need to hear the rest of these albums.

Might be a little too clean for you with a few hundred watts too much power, but the VBA400 has a really great defined sound (all the other marshall bass stuff I've heard is proper muddy). Might have a little to much going on in the low end for you but with a bit of a cut there and a bit of boost on the mids with contour on style 2 it has heaps of awesome low mids. Anyway it might be worth checking out, not that it's the cheapest amp out there...
