Marshall guitar amp on bass. Help needed!

Sign in to disble this ad
So my guitarist has a Marshall 1987x 50 watt plexi reissue amp he's selling. I went to play it and I ran it softly through his 4x12 guitar cab. The tone was haw dropping and I am considering buying it.

My issue is that the head only runs at 16ohm and the 4x10 cab I was looking at is 8ohm. Is it possible to rewire the cab to 16 ohm, or would I be better off buying a empty 4x12 cab and buying bass speakers and wiring it to 16 ohms?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Are you positive there isn't a impedance selector on the back ? should be a 4-8-16 selector

like this

He said there wasn't, but I looked online at the manual and there was one on it. So he's going to double check

Yeah, there should be one, tube amps need them.

To answer your question..........

No - you cannot rewire an 8 ohm cab to be 16 ohms.

Run it loudly before you buy. I recently sold off a Marshall 100 just because it breaks up too early to be useful in many live situations, for me. Also, no you won't be able to rewire that cab as you wish.

Hi.

+1 to the rewiring to be impossible.
+1 to the impedance switch.

I'm a fan of Marshall guitar amps with bass, but if 50W is really all You need, running a 100 watter with two tubes is much better option.

OTOH, if Your guitarist and drummer can play quietly enough for you to keep up with the 1987x, hang onto those guys .

Regards
Sam

As mentioned above, you can't rewire an 8 ohm cab to 16 ohm, but you could rewire a 4 ohm cab to 16 ohms if that helps.
