Marshall Super Bass vs. Ampeg V4

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm a big fan of the old 100 watters and I'm looking to get my mits on one. I want to find a Marshall preferably but I was wondering how the V4 runs because there seem to be more of them about. I've heard some tones out of it and it sounds good, but which one drives better? They're meant to be pretty similar and I can probably pick one up cheaper than the 1992LEM ($3000). I dig on crunchy mids, like this >>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYUq-geowww

Any opinions would be rad.

Both radically different but in some ways equally delightful amps. For most recent tone references, think Lemmy versus baby SVT. If you can find an old Traynor YBA-3, it is very nice with sort of a 50/50 split Marshall/Hiwatt tone thing. V4B is going to sound Ampeg with option of output stage distortion at less than ear bleed levels. Marshall does the the glorious cranked EL-34 tube thing. With proper cabs that are efficient the results will be brutal.

I love my V4 to death, will never part with it. You need to try one, it has rich harmonics at the sweet spot.

V4B/B25b

I am currently using an Ampeg V4B head into an Ampeg B25b cabinet with excellent results at decent volume.

I have and use both, even if my Superbass is a Copy of a Marshall Superlead built from Weber Plans.
