Matching preamp to power amp help...

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a BBE BMax preamp and a few different power amps I can run it with. I'm trying to find the best match for the pres output level. The set up is running through a Dr. Bass 3x10 cab rated at 1000 watts at 8 ohms.

Here are my choices:
1. Crest CA6- input sensitivity is .775 volts, as per the website.. 1100 watts at 8 ohms bridged

2. Crown XLS1000 - 1.4 volts ... 700 watts at 8 bridged

3. Qsc plx1804 - 1.2 volts, 600 watts at 8 stereo (can't bridge the amp)

Would I be pushing the crest too hard? The lower wattage outputs are fine if I can push the amp with the BBe to give me a strong signal.

There is no "best match" as long as the preamp is capable of driving the power amp to suitable levels for your needs. According to your specs the CA6 will sound louder at a lower level on the power amp's dial, but that's what the dial is there for. Turn the CA6 level down and you have a match

The Bmax has tons of gain, especially the first generation. You will not have a problem running any of your power amps with it.

I used different preamps and power amps for 25 years, and never really noticed any difference between pre amps, or power amps, for that matter, except for weight and bells and whistles. If you like the BBE, then try different power amps to see what you like. The newer power amps have built in low pass filters you can set, like the new Crown Drivcore amps, along with crossover points, and they weigh next to nothing compared to the older favorites. A nice compromise is the 21 lb , older QSC PLX series. Used them for years with absolutely no problems. In fact, the preamps died while the QSC kept chugging right along.
