Mesa 2x15 Diesel speaker replacement?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Mesa Diesel 2x15 with original EVM 15L speakers. One of them has a bad voice coil. I have an Eminence 3015LF that I was thinking of putting in the bottom, but thought I would check with you guys to see if anyone else has done this and how it worked out, or how you think it would work?

I doubt you will like it with out some kind of crossover and mid range drive ala a fEarful.

But if you already have it, no harm in throwing it in there! You might just like the result. I tested the 3015LF alone in a fEarful cab. Tons of bottom and nothing else. As you might expect for a LF driver.

Then I paired it with a TL 606 cab loaded with a 3015, the full range driver. It was much better, but pretty scooped sounding. Lots of lows, but overall, not as nice as the 606/3015 alone. That would be what I'd predict if you just put in the 3015LF with the EV.

A better replacement would probably be another EVM or a 3015 full range. The 3015 would save you some weight. I replaced the 15's in an older 2-15 Peavey cab with the 3015's. Knocked off some weight, sounded better, but I don't think the cab was the optimal size or porting. The 3015's did better in the 606 cabs with slightly larger ports.

Assuming the bolt pattern is the same and you can just transplant the 3015LF in, you'll know the answer to your question in half an hour.

FWIW, I'm going to put a 3015LF into one of those 606 cabs, add a low pass crossover, and use it as a sub for my fEarful 15/6/1. It'll do until I have time to build a bigger cab for the sub.

Does anyone have any experience with the re-coning kits from this company? https://www.soundspeakerrepair.com/s...+Drop-in+Kits/

I sure wouldn't have the self confidence to perform the recone myself.

I have the same cabinet, bought it with 2 15" Peavey Black Widows. It sounds great with them. Couldn't pass up the deal, 200 bucks used at the local Guitar Center. Run it with a BBE BMAX-T Preamp and QSC power amp. Loud, and great tone..

I haven't dealt with that company, but it add copy sounds good.
If you want to stay original, a recone kit can do that, for not much bux.
If you want that + more bottom (at the expense of some lost highs)
the EVM15B kit would change your L to a B and add bottom.
If you want less weight and more power handling, go for the 3015.

Recone Zone 1!!
I blew a couple of EV10s recently when my amp went BBQ, I was scared to recone myself, but it is a lot easier than I thought, the Youtube video is super-helpful, and for $120 I have 2 speakers sounding good again.

The EV15L is a great cone, the 15b does not have more bass, it has less mid due to a diff cone design. Get the 15L and EQ it, better to have it and not need it that attempt to coax mids ( and use valueable power) out of the 15Bs

If you do replace, replace with EV, the cabs are tuned for them, and they sound so much better than anything ever produced by Eminenece,( which that cab is NOT tuned for.)

The kits they sell are fine but if you live outside the US they wont send the special glue these days because it contains toluene as in tri nitro. So don't smoke while you are doing it.
