Mesa Basis M-2000 Mute button question...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I'm hoping some of you that have owned or do still use this amp can answer this question. I bought an M-2000 used and I like it a lot, but it's been to the repair shop a couple times already, mostly for the DI, and now the DI works BUT...

Last night at the gig I ran the DI "pre" and set the footswitch selector switch to "tune", hoping for muted tuning through the amp's tuner out. The mute was muting the power amp, but NOT the DI.

I checked the manual and they are not explicit- in fact they say only that the mute function mutes the power amp. It does also say that in "pre" the DI is connected directly to the input. So tonight I am going to try running the DI in "post" mode and see if muting mutes the DI send.

I was wondering what others have found using the amp. I want to get it back to the shop ASAP for warranty work on the DI work they did, so I figured I'd ask here instead of waiting until Monday to call Mesa. Besides, it's a discontinued product so Mesa may not know the answer. Anyway here is the explicit question: should the DI mute with the footswitch even when the DI is set to "pre"? Will it mute when the DI is set to "post"?

Frankly I will be a bit disappointed if the mute-to-tune function doesn't mute the DI, that seems like a big design miss. Thanks guys.

So... not much info here on TB. I guess I have to wait for KJung to log back in.

Found out on the gig Saturday that running the DI "post" made the mute function work on the DI as well as the power amp, so it seems like this is a design decision by Mesa to not have mute work on the DI when it is in "pre" mode. Not a decision I like, but one I can live with. So- everyone, keep ignoring this thread, I think I've got what I needed in terms of info.

Yeah, I think that's common to several Mesa amps - I remember my BB750's DI/mute working exactly like that... Fortunately, I prefer to run post-EQ DI sends, but not everyone does...

I think that rather than send that amp in for repairs for a DI problem, *I* would just buy a JDI or Countryman, depending on what basses I typically gigged with - seems like a more cost effective solution to me... The DI in my BB750 did sound very good, as does the DI in the M-pulse 600 I currently have, FWIW...

Thanks Georgestrings, I actually do have an ok DI (not a Countryman, but ok), but I do not have a tuner that mutes. I don't particularly like the idea of putting such a tuner into my signal path, thus the desire to make use of the amp's 'tuner out' functionality. I can continue to use 'post' for club shows and the like, and I don't do heavy EQing. I won't need to worry about an expensive in-line tuner and a nice DI for the foreseeable future.

But thanks for confirming this slightly less than desirable functionality on the Mesa amps. I think it is working properly so I'll have to live with it.

Yeah, I like to keep the tuner out of my signal chain whenever possible, too - I totally understand that approach... I'm not sure, but I think my M-pulse 600 works that way, too - but I prefer a post-EQ send whenevr I can get away with it...
