Mesa Big Block Pot?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just noticed that when I turn my master volume pot I hear faint crackling through the speakers. Is this something I should be worried about?

Sounds like cleaning the pot might help... there are some "specially formulated cleaning substances". Check out http://www.thegearpage.net/board/arc...p/t-13956.html

It's probably just a scratchy pot, use a contact cleaner to clean it out. Try Deoxit.

This ^^, Or if you don't feel comfortable with doing it you could send it to me and I will dispose of it properly.

Proper disposal methods dictate you drive it 2 hours towards the great white north and drop it off to me!

Caig De-Oxit rocks for jacks and switches but I like the readily available Radio Shack "TV Tuner Cleaner" for pots. It has more lubricant content and just "feels" better for me. IMO can't go wrong with either. My local mom an' pop electronics joint sells the Caig but I keep the RS on hand just for pots.... It is at least worth a try for ya and I feel that every musician should have at least one on hand and know how to use it It is probably the most versatile spray can you could invest in.

And how would I go about cleaning it? I have never messed with a pot, and I have not even the slightest clue of how to clean them in an amp.

Well....assuming that you either know how to discharge the filter caps (or between you and me don't touch a god damn thing inside that amp) it's as simple as spraying the "red straw" inside the pots. Or "controls" if you will. There is going to be a small dimple or indentation in the case of the pot. I like to spray below that where the "slit" with the exposed carbon wafer and solder tabs sit. Give it a quick half-second blast and rotate the shaft back and forth. PLEASE PLEASE make sure that you don't touch or do anything stupid. I don't think this is rocket science but it takes some common sense. Read up on the subject a bit friend ;-) You will be a better person (bassist) for it.
