Mesa Boogie 2x15 questions

Sign in to disble this ad
So I have a few questions. A friend has a Mesa Boogie 2x15. Now he received it when his friend left it behind in a move and has no knowledge about it. From what I could gather, form searching the internet, it's an old RR2x15. It has only one 1/4 input and I believe it is 800 watts. It has nothing on the back saying what the ohms are. I'm still terrible with that stuff anyway. So my questions are 1). Can anyone confirm the wattage?
2). Does anyone know if this cab is 4 or 8 ohms 3). What watt head would you recommend?

If you need anymore info let me know.
Thank you.

The one you describe sounds like mine.

You may have to pull a speaker to check, but if they are originals, then they are loaded with EVM 15L's. The only problem is that they were made in 200 watt and 400 watt versions. All were 8 ohms each.

So...........the cab is definitely 4 ohms, but it may be either 400 watt or 800 watt total.

And............just to expand on my other post.

My RR2X15 has only a single 1/4 input, and no serial number or other markings.

Mine was loaded with the 200 watt version of the 15L's

A D180, 400, or 400+ would be an excellent choice.

Actually, no.
Mesa made the 2x15 boxes, and still makes them, in 4 or 8 ohm versions. Also, if you read the bass 400 or D180 manual it recommends that bass players who want more...
rewire their (parallel) 4 ohm 2x15's to (series) 16ohm and plug two 2x15 cabs into the (parallel) 8 ohm jacks. that is why there are two of them!
Also I believe the original stock speakers were 200W (400W total) with the 400W speakers (800 total) being an upgrade.
I know a lot of guys would get those and blast them loud for weeks until the fateful show where they couldnt quite hear themselves and ended up blowing out both drivers, at which point they got the upgraded speakers or, a lot of guys liked Gauss 15" in those cabs.

So yeah, it could be 16, 8 or 4 ohms. Borrow or buy a multitester and check the ohms.
If it reads about 5.8-6.2 ohms its 8ohms. If you are getting 3.2 its 4 and if you get 11-14 its 16 ohms.
(DC resistance reads differently than AC impedance).

Also could be the mesa custom speakers which were a hybrid of the Force line and the 15L.
Just a little former Petaluma resident knowledge.

If it's an older Deisel cab, it is more than likely a 4 ohm cab. Mine is rated for 800 watts, and I've used both a 300 watt head, and a 1100 watt head with it. Great sounding, punchy cab. I agree, a Mesa D-180, Buster, or 400+ would be a great match.
