Is any one familiar with mesa boogie all tube bass head. From my understanding they don't make them any more. If you have had any experience with them how would you compare it to the ampeg classic.

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe... Welcome to Talk Bass. I see that you've recently joined the TB community. One of the things you'll soon see is that TB has an ethos of searching for information before opening new threads asking questions.

Mesa Boogie is one of the more talked about amps on TB and I'm sure that if you use the search function, you'll find many topics on the subject.

So, having said that, Mesa does not currently make an all-tube head (although we hear vague rumors that they may have one in the works). The 400+ and 400 are popular amps that have their own voicing that is somewhat different than Ampeg SVTs. While I have not used either (I use a Mesa Fathom/M6), my understanding is that the 400(+) voicing is somewhat scooped when compared to the more mid-focused SVT (those with direct experience please correct me if I'm off base here).

The D180-B was my favorite Mesa bass amp.
Big, full, clean tone, that over-drive great.
Please reissue it Mesa?

Good description Matt for someone who has never used either head, spot on.

jfiftyone, I have both the Mesa 400+ and Ampeg tube heads. All I can say about the Mesa is LOUD.
