Mesa/Boogie Bass 400 tubes...where to buy?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking for somewhere that sells a full retube set for a Mesa/Boogie Bass 400 (non plus). I know eurotubes sells a matched sextet + preamp tubes for about $260. Does anybody know of anywhere else that sells a set of these? I know for these Mesas the the bias is fixed and can't be adjusted so the tubes have to be set correctly to match the discontinued Mesa 6550s. Eurotubes is the only company I've been able to find so far that sells a specific retube kit for this amp. Any other suggestions?

I got my tubes for my Bass 400 (and all my other amps) from Bob at Eurotubes.
You can also buy matched tube sets from Lordvalve.

I'm pretty sure tubedepot.com can get you a set, and you can choose to go with something other than JJs.

Or, call Lord Valve at NBS Electronics in Denver. He'll set you up with exactly what you need, and they will be tested & matched the right way. He sells other brands besides JJ, too.

Good suggestions, so far. I would also recommend Doug Preston (www.dougstubes.com)

He is, going strong following a recent bionic upgrade (pacemaker - who knew he had a heart? ). He tubed my Mesa D-180 with a set of Winged C's. Perfect.

I believe so. My neighbor kid down the street that plays guitar told me he bought a set of tubes from him a couple months ago.

Eurotubes/JJ's are great. I've retubed power sections with him a few times (I've actually been pretty satisfied with the Mesa stock pre tubes). Go for the KT-88's while you are at it, totally worthwhile upgrade.

A note: Bob's "matched to amp" tubes aren't consistent. I've gotten totally different batches of tubes from him that he said were matches for the 400's fixed bias. My tech tested the replacements and found they were very disimilar from the previous set. If you ask for a set for the 400, make sure he commits to giving you a set for the 400, not just whatever matched sets of KT-88's/6L6 are lying around.
