Mesa-Boogie Walkabout Speaker

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

I have concluded that my Walkabout has a speaker issue. I thought it was tubes in the amp so I swapped them out one at a time with new ones and still had the issue. So I ran a signal from a different amp and still had the problem. Just to be sure, I ran the Mesa amp into another cab and it sounded fine.

So my question is: Is it possible that something other than the speaker is malfunctioning? I'm just trying to avoid spending 100+ on a speaker only to find it is something else, like the PCN or the horn.

Thanks in advance for any advice/troubleshooting tips.

Jim

Hi Jim. My guess is it the driver, however maybe something is broken or lose and rattling inside the cab so it sounds like a blown speaker.

What is it doing or not doing?

Boogie Blowout

Thank you, Gentlemen, for replying.

I opened it up and inspected the speaker. No visually obvious damage from heat or massive excursion...(ie, no flames or San Andreas Fault). But it sounds terrible, what with the crackling and popping. It seems as though it would be highly unlikely for the passive radiator to fail, right?

Cone in motion

Thank you for the reply. I just did that. No rubbing, scraping, or scratching noises detected.

Is there any measurements I can do that might point me in the right direction? Or should I just call Mesa and pitch a fit until they agree to fix it?

What? The cab has an active speaker and a passive radiator as well? (Passive radiators have no magnet or voice coil).
Use a 9 volt battery to connect to the speaker (amp dis-connected) and listen for sounds of a damaged speaker. Anything other than a click or thump means the speaker is hurt.
