Mesa cab crossover help

Sign in to disble this ad
I just realized I have never messed with the crossover in my Powerhouse 1000 cab. Not to mention i dont really understand crossovers. It has :

5k-normal
3k-bright
4k-sheen

I always leave it on normal. What will i notice if I change the settings? Especially you Mesa cab owners.

I have the same type crossover on both my PH cabs, and basically it changes the crossover frequency so that the cab sounds it's brightest at 3k, and it's least bright at 5k... I typically leave mine at 5k, and set my horns somewhere between -2db and 0 db...

It controls the frequency that is sent to the horn instead of the main driver(s). At 5k, only the very highest frequencies are sent to the horn. 4k lowers that "frequency threshold" so the horn handles a wider frequency, and the sound is brighter. 3k widens the range handled by the horn even further, and is the brightest setting.

Keep in mind that you don't even have to have the horn turned on, so you can also use the crossover to set a sort of high rolloff for dark, dubby tones

Yeah, I have always left the horn level on "0" Never experimented with that either.

My pick tones sounded brighter and a little edgier at the 3khz setting. I felt the tweeter was much more useful too.
