Mesa M9 vs Mesa Big Block 750

Sign in to disble this ad
Alright guys, this is what I am debating on. Should I get the M9 or the 750. The music I play is Metal. I have yet to play on any of them, but I have played on the Mesa M6 carbine and it felt a little thin sounding, but that could be because I didn't have much time to tweak with it. The M9 is $100 cheaper than the 750. I am kinda leaning toward the M9 because of the graphic EQ, but I am also leaning toward the 750 due to its gain output. The gain on that head is ridiculous from watching videos. The tone I am aiming for is not so much distortion, maybe a bit of fuzz, but I will get that from either my MXR M-80 or my soon to be Tech 21 VT Bass pedal, and a real hard hitting punch. Listen to the bass tone in this song at around 0:11. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5z2e6BbrlE

Kinda an idea from that tone. I also plan on running it through a Mesa Powerhouse 6x10 or 8x10. Any tips?

I would say BB750 for metal. Gain on a Mesa, especially that one, is no joke.

Normally for bass overdrives, you lose quite a bit of fundamental but not on the Mesas. That said, I still love my SVT-II because I don't use that kind of tone.

If you want any kind of overdrive, you want the 750.
The M9 is a clean machine.

However, the clean machine takes overdrive/distortion pedals swimmingly.

The tone you like in that song actually IS a BB750!

I just bought a Titan V-12 two weeks ago. I was looking at the M9 as well, but the tone of the 750 (or V-12) is a natural fit for the music I'm playing. As you said, the M6 sounded "thin" and needed tweaking. The 750 is absolutely awesome in a Metal environment.

Actually the bass in that is out of an Ampeg SVT Classic. I talked to the bass player at a show not too long ago.

Yeah, I think I am leaning more toward the BB750. Would it be best to be paired with an 8x10 or a 6x10?

I play metal and the bb750 with a 4x10 is all you will ever need. The overdrive is great for old sabbath like n.i.b. I tried 15's but the 10's worked better for me!!

I always thought the BB750 was a bit short on power - I would go with the Titan or the M9.

I owned both at the same time for quite awhile but ended up keeping the M9 and sold the BB750. Not that it wasn't an amazing tone machine but I just didn't need both and the M9 has an amazing tone that is very tweakable.

The BB750 was plenty loud (540 watts at 4 ohms), had the best bass overdrive circuit ever designed and was very fat and warm sounding. All this talk is making me want it back!!

Fair enough. He's listed as endorsing the 750 on Mesa's site so I went from there.

As to which cab, I run a 2x12 and a 1x15 but if it's a toss up between 6x10 or 8x10, why stop at 6!

Seeing as how the amp is stable down to 2 ohms, why stop at 8?

Because an 8x10 is a bitch to move around hah. A 6x10 isn't as hard. Not only that, I mean is an 8x10 even really necessary playing live?

I always felt the BB750 was Mesa's take on the 'Ampeg Grind'. That's the one you want IMO and IME.

One thing, it doesn't really start to cook until you get it to 4ohms, and actually the '750' name is based on power output at 2ohms. The 4ohm Mesa610 would be the voice of god with this thing if you like it grindy and growly and aggressive, without a ton of low end.

I'm probably the minority here, but I'd go with the M9 and a Tech 21 VT.

I have owned the BB750 and now I have the M9. You mentioned that you wanted hard hitting punch and IMO that's where the M9 shines above the BB750. You can use the VT bass to dial in the midrange grind.

In my current rig I have an M9 with the VT bass/Barge blend pedal > El Whappo cab. This combo is punchy and grindy in an ungodly kind of way. You can dial in some huge low end but it stays quick......if that makes any sense at all.

don't let the watts\ohm thing scare you,the BB 750 is plenty loud enough at 4 ohm..BTW the OD has a good range too, from light grit to wooly fuzz with emphasis in the mids that cut like a knife. I run mine thru a scout 15(4ohm) and it fills every club I play in.

That's what I was thinking. You think Guitar Center would order a BB750 and an M9 Carbine, along with a Powerhouse 6x10 cab for me to try it out side by side?

No idea. I haven't really dealt with GC other than a few sets of strings here and there.

Ask them!

From what you are after, I would think that the BB750 (driving either a 4 or a 2-ohm load) would be the ticket. That, or a Titan V-12!

Isn't the Titan V-12 basically two BB750s in one?
