Mesa Power House 15 Blown horn?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok i was cleaning my bass today and restrung it, Hooked it up to my setup to tune and i smell something that i can only describe as bandaids. Didn't think much of it because i just used polish etc on my bass. i start playing my bass and i hear a faint distortion/rattle sound. i stand next to my cab to see if i can pinpoint what/where the sound is coming from. i then totally lose the sound out of my speaker. i just get distorted sound out of my horn. sounds like loud distorted headphones. i took the speaker out and looked around and nothing really jumped out at me as being peculiar. i tried different cables etc. my 4x10 works fine. i was just running head + 115...the 4x10 wasn't hooked up.

i use a mesa 400+ with ph4x10 + ph115 (i know)

Just thought i would ask for opinions on this issue.

I too occasionally use a ph410 and ph115. I run them with either an SVT2pro or SVT4pro depending on how my back feels. I also have a second ph410 so usually I use both 410s. I have never had any problems with the 115 to speak of. I have run it by itself for rehearsal gigs where I couldn't bring a 410. i've pushed it pretty hard too with the svt4's channel A (300 watts into 8 ohms per side). This is probably less than what your 400+ is capable of, but it doesn't sound like you were pushing it too hard.
But perhaps it is blown as the 410 can handle more than the 115 (part of the reason why some advise against the mixed cab config). you could have been within the limits of the 410 the last time you used the cabs together, but ended up pushing the 115 past its limits. and now that your playing just the 115, the damage is revealed. Is that plausible, or have you been playing the 115 by itself for a while now?

i've actually never hooked up both cabs to this amp. i've been using the 15 for a little while now..before i was using the 4x10..i pushed the 4x10 really hard with the 400+..running both channels at max and master at max..ending up tearing the cone a little..so i started using my 15 until i get a new speaker for my 4x10... i haven't been and wasn't pushing the 15 cab hard at all when this happened.

But you also might be right about the problem being there the whole time and just went unnoticed. i've used the 4x10 almost exclusively. i got both cabs at the same time. i just mainly used the 15 to raise my 4x10 off the floor.

funny you mention the torn cone in the 410. I think one of mine might have the same issue. I am very very careful with my gear, but I did in one weak moment turn up really loud and play one of my 410 for about 15 or 20 minutes. I'm sure i was at the xmax of speakers and I played anyway. it never sounded the same since, and I wonder if i didn't do the same thing you did.
You should call mesa, i hear those guys have great CS. some here even know those guys by name. Is yours in warranty? did you send in the card? mine is new from 08 and serial number 0001636. so it doesnt seem like they make tons of these things. they might even remember making the batch that yours was in. call 'em and see.

i bought mine off the forums couple years ago...the 4x10 was my fault..i cranked everything up and ended up turning on my envelope filter with no compression/limiting ..after that i would get destorted/farty notes on my low e string at certain volumes..took the grill off and saw the damage...that i know how to fix...the 15, i'm not sure about.
