Question Mesa Powerhouse or Vintage powerhouse..??

Sign in to disble this ad
Whats the difference tonally..??
physically i've noticed in pictures that the Vintage PH has thinner wood than the PH and the PH has one extra port on the bottom left corner. This is for the 2x12..

Does the vintage actually sound vintage..?? and does the PH sound modern..??

Or am i thinking too much and they are just two different grilles..??
but im most definately sure the VPH has thinner wood..!!

Notice the gap between the beggining of the grill and the lexan corner is much more in the PH than the VPH

I use powerhouse cabs and they have a great tone...
the 2x10 is the biggest sounding 2x10 I've heard aside from Paul Tidwell's LoPhat 2x10

I believe the only real difference is in the asthetics, metal grill vs. cloth, etc. They should sound identical, which is neither modern nor vintage, but rather Mesa-y; full, punchy and loud. The 212 is low-mid accented, great for a cutting bass tone. I'd buy whichever one you like the looks of most.

I've owned a VPH and can confirm its the aesthetics, and the box _seems_ a little bigger on the PH because of the grill placement - but it isn't. Great cab.

I prefer the steel grille just for transport-ability.

Silver grilled goodness even better ;O)

When I spoke with Mesa, that was one of the questions that I asked. According to the person that I spoke with, the only difference between the two cabinets is looks. One looks vintage and one looks modern. I personally like the look of the Powerhouse better and plan on buying that one in another few months or so.

Thanks so much for all your responses...

But im pretty sure there's one extra port on the PH..I just love the vintage PH look but want the PH cuz of that extra port..!!! , and better protection... but what if the VPH has lesser low end..!! lol its possible ok im not obsessive..!!

Has anyone AB'd them..??
If its aesthetics only, im going fr the vintage

"uaudio" - i noticed the grille placement in both and i think the PH does have thicker wood.. that should make the cabinets weigh different.. even the grille would affect the weight..

I've had both... there isn't an extra port on the Powerhouses.

Through the powerhouse black metal grill i see a small triangular corner port on the bottom left..!!

I checked your vintage PH212 pic in one of my treads with the grill cloth off..and it doesn't have that port.

Anyways do they sound different..??

If you look at the pictures, the Vintage appears to have "thinner walls"? Can anyone comment on this?

Why don't you call Mesa and let *them* tell you that the ONLY difference is in the appearance.

It could've been changes done in the middle of engineering when they took the pictures. Who knows.

Personally, I like the Vintage Powerhouse. It looks 1000000 times classier and prettier, imho.

The Powerhouse cabs have some differences over the past few years but there is no difference between a PH or VPH cab of the same year save for the grill. Keep in mind that the silver grilled cabs with the thicker rhino tolex can make the wood look thicker then the newer Bronco tolex which I am actually quite disappointed in as it scuffs and tears way too easily.

I have two silver grilled PH 115 cabs, both are 400 watt versions but one has the Player Control network on the back and triangle porting and the other only has a horn level and round ports. The older one has a slightly growlier tone but they are so close that i consider them virtually identical. The newest version of this cab has the same porting but has a 600 watt driver in it.

I'm sorry to be so disagreeable, but if you look closely at the image below of the powerhouse 212, you'll see the same two ports and the horn attenuator (tweeter).... it's the round thing above the bottom left driver. The dark triangle in the lower left corner isn't a port... just an optical illusion of darkness that looks like a triangle.
