Mesa Scout 15 ext Cab VS. Vintage Powerhouse 212

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi ALL:

I have a Walkabout Scout 12. Haven't used it till last weekend for some months - the head took a tumble and stopped working but it turns out only a pair of new tubes was required to fix it.

I really dig this little monster and I often think about replacing my M-Pulse 600(115 and 410 cabs) with the walkabout altogether. But to do that, I need way more speaker.

1) I have thought about getting the scout 15" extension cab to run with it. I've heard Paz Lenchantin of Entrance play the Scout 15 combo live and it rocks hard!

2) I'm also wondering about doing a vintage powerhouse 212 as my bottom end.

What do you guys think? I've read many comparisons between the scout 12 and 15 here but not between the scout 15 and 212.

Lastly - regarding gigging 2 - 4 ohm cabs @ 2ohm load - many of you do it - should I be worried or just run with it?

Thanks,

CM

You should checkout the mega thread for the Walkabout - there are several guys who use a 212 with the head and prefer it to the Scout cabs.

Yeah, what I do, and others too, is use a 4 ohm 2x12 with the head. Keep the Scout 12 as a back-up, or for smaller gigs, practice, whatever, but get the PH 212 as a 4 ohm, and use it alone. Sure, many users report that 2 ohm operation is ok, but you'd need to keep the gain and volume near noon, or risk over heating. I just like to play it safe.

I run a Walkabout 12 Scout stack at 2 ohms and have no issues. I run the gain between noon and 1 o'clock. Anything past 10 or so on the master gets into stupid loud territory. I have also run the WA into a PH212 at 4 ohms and it sounded great. Should be plenty for about any gig especially with PA support.
