Which Micro Head for This cab?

Sign in to disble this ad
It's been re-loaded and tuned with a Kappalite 3015. There will soon be a second, a clone of this loaded and tuned with another 3015:

I'm considering a micro in light of a potential increase in gig activity this year. Venues will range from large stage with monster FOH to small watering-holes with bass-and-guitar duos. Sometimes last-minute calls to "Just show up"... but I hate just plugging into a tiny, beat-up bar PA.

I already wok a relatively hard-labor job for my day-gig, and an increase in gigging means upping the "hectic Factor" a notch in our household. So, less heft and hump, less shoving tools and stuff around means I can pretty much just pick up my gig-bag, micro head in-pocket, a < 40 lb. cab by the strap-handle, and git going.

I've never been very interested in these before, but I see the practical side of it now. It's not about the search for tone so much, it's about work and efficiency. I'm pretty sure it'll sound better than a toast-r-oven! So what do you think?

EDIT: Mostly I'll just use one cab...

I use my Streamliner 900 and Shuttle 9 on an Uber 115 cab with great results.... I believe it may be similar to the 3015 but i am not sure.. they have proprietary builds for their speakers and their cabs but still its a nice 115 and the Genz head works the cab nicely... It will fill any bar gig with ease..... and if you need a GREAT DI.. its already in either of those heads...

I've heard the Genz Shuttle 6.0 through 2x Bag End S15-Ds. Big sound for sure.

My vote is for the Ampeg PF350 or PF500.

Really, just about any of these choices would work for you - assuming you choose a model with sufficient power to drive both your cabs well. That said, the Kappalite 3015 is reputed to be quite efficient, and if your cab design is as well, then a good 500 watts or so should do the trick.

I like the 'clean & modern' sound - and I'm generally not a fan of the Ampeg sound - so I would suggest you wait a few weeks, then snap up a new GK MB800, soon as it hits the market. But the Genz Benz and MarkBass would both be worthy candidates as well...

Well although the cab seems to work well with the Trace 250SMX, in reality the jury is still pretty much 'out'. It's more or less 'tuned' with WinISD, sans a few numbers that would narrow cab volume down to "precise".

But I don't bet I'd be losing with any of them either.

I like a not-too-hi-fi sound, so a little color or shape to the tone is okay; I sort of work with a thing until I "hear" it, if you can infer what I mean. There are just too many things to try, and not enough time or bread to do all that. But I do like my Trace Elliot head, if that's any help!

I also had an Acoustic 370 which was just a beautiful sound to my ears. Don't ask (where it is now)...! But there are two of my favorite sounds, for ss heads.

Thanks for replies so far.

Personal preference. Nothing more. We can all pick what *we'd* prefer, but to answer the question, *you'll* need to test them out and see what you like.

Righty. I just posted concurrence to this comment on another forum- basically that I'm after a signal on the general impression of these little boogers. I'll be dragging a bass and cab to GC at some point I guess.

Thanks for the reply.

While I was saving to buy my 210, I used my SL900 through my 115. Sounds great. Pair a 210 or 410 on top and you've got MASSIVE tone. I love my rig and it was worth every penny.

The SL-900 will have enough head room to make the 1-15 sound great. It also has enough head room to make 2-15's sound great. Love mine.

I won't bother recommending a brand (though my favorite micro right now is the SVT 7 Pro ), but in general, I like micros way better than normal SS heads. They seem to have something that reminds me very much of tube amps that I never got out of lead sleds. Then there are dudes like Vail Johnson who considers all micros a joke. At the end of the day, we're all going to die

You been rummaging around in my head, Jimmy?

Interesting remarks though, about the quality of sound in a micro vs the more typical bass heads.
