what speakers would be good for using it with my svt at 4 ohms???
would i have to change the wiring and get the jack plate on the back modded for a 1/4 cable???
i have a mid 80's ampeg svt and i wanted to get an ampeg v4 4x12 cab for those times when i cant bring my 8x10 to a gig.

Did the MTI era heads have a 2/4 ohm switch or was that later? If it does have a 2/4 switch, you could go the JohnK route and add wire up the V4 cab with eminence 3012 or 2512 speakers (I think those were the two options) at 2 ohms and be good to go. Otherwise, you'll have to find some 4 or 16 ohm bass-friendly 12s that will work in that cab to wire for 4 ohms.

There have been quite a few threads on respeaking V4 cabs for bass use, I'd say try searching for those and see what people recommend.

Also, I believe in those threads, it was mentioned there's really no need to load in all 4 slots, so most of them only loaded 2 12s.

id rather just have it 4 ohms so i dont have to worry about anything. so id have to get four 16ohm or four 4ohm speakers for it to work on 4 ohms? i guess id have to get someone to do it for me. haha.

Like I mentioned in my previous post. In the threads discussing the use of the V4 as a bass cab, people (I think it was JohnK and BFM) have already chimed in saying that 2 of the 3012s would be enough to get the most out of that cab. So they just blocked off the other 2 holes.

Given that, I think it'd be easiest just to source 2 8 ohm speakers and wire them in parallel, and save yourself some cash and some weight.

There is a mix. BFM suggested the optimal method would be two 8 ohm 3012 or 2512s with the other two holes blocked to produce a sealed 2x12 which could be wired to 4 ohms by putting the speakers in parallel.

To keep it a 4x12 and get 4 ohms as the final impedance you would need four 4 ohm speakers in series/parallel configuration or four 16 ohm speakers in a parallel configuration. Most people have opted for the 3012 or 2512 speakers because they're neos and really help to cut down on weight, but the price of neos skyrocketed recently, so four of those will set you back a decent amount.

I know that eminence makes a few 4 or 16 ohm bass 12s (delta 12B for example) but I don't know how they would sound in this box. I recommended the neos because people who have upgraded speakers in these cabs have gone that route with positive results. It would be a wise use of your time to speak to a professional who could guide you though the process of trying to model with WinISD how a given speaker would sound given the dimensions of the V4 cab.

thanks man! you really know what ur talkin about.
i know u have to have the right speakers for the internal specs of the cab. im just not sure about that stuff. seriously, why have a 4x12 if ur only using 2 holes? that sounds rediculous. it would only save 10-15 pounds.

To maintain optimum internal volume for the speakers. That's not to say they wont work if you had 4, but at least according to those who know way more than I do about that kind of stuff those speakers are better in the larger volume.
