Question Might get a new Ashdown MAG 300H EVO II...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello everyone.

So I've been looking to upgrade my ol-faithful bass head, the Kustom DE 300. I guess since my band is getting a bit louder and more mobile, I wanted something of an easier-to pack head with more features and control than my DE... so I've been shopping around and I found a nice Ashdown amp that fits all my requirements: the Ashdown MAG 300H EVO II. Personally, I was looking at getting into their company at one point, and I just so happen to have enough money to go for that head. I'm probably gonna use it with my 4ohm Kustom cabinets with Eminence speakers (4x10 and 1x15).

Since the amp itself is at 307w rms with 8 ohms, I figure my two cabs will be all right for now, so this discussion is just about the amp. Does anyone have any experience with one? Any info would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,

-HME19

Oh deary me.

Read the FAQ's about amps and ohms etc.

The head is 307w at 4 ohms, and about 200w at 8 ohms.

4 ohm cab + 4 ohm cab does not equal 8 ohms usually. It will result in 2 ohms, which will KILL your amplifier.

It's a 4 ohm amplifier, which means you can run a single 4 ohm cabinet, or a pair of 8 ohm cabinets.

Any more questions, let me know

I'm sure the tone is the least of his worries. He needs to figure out Ohms first.

Oh dear. The guy I talk to about gear that turned me on to the Ashdown told me it would work with my current cabs... They were rated at 300w rms at 4, and I think the amp was 307w rms at 8... With a minimum load requirement of 4. Is there any other amp that would pretty much be another viable option around the same price point?

Okay, how about this?

Tech 21 SansAmp RBI
Running into an American Audio VLP 600w power amp
and out to my two cabs?

That can run 300 watts a side at 4 ohms, and I can put one cab on either 'side' to run them both at RMS comfortably.

Sure, a rackmount setup won't be much smaller than my current setup, but I guess I could do that so if I need to play larger gigs, I can upgrade the power amp.

Would this work? I honestly already read the stuff on Ohms and it goes totally over my head the way they explain it... Sorry...

I have the same head, minus compression. It's 300w at 4 ohms.

HI, sorry to put my answer here, but I think isnīt necessary to open a new thread for this.
So, can I run my Ashdown MAG 300H EVO II with a Galien Krueger 115MBE200 Bass Cabinet with no problems? This cab is a 200watts at 4ohm.

It'll be fine with either one of your cabs on it's own, but don't try connect them both...

To Iurssabuir, your cab is under the amp's power rating, so don't crank the volume above half way or so, as a rough rating. Turn down the low bass on the EQ a little, your cab might be able to put up with a bit more grief then. Also, since it's a small cab, it won't be at ear level which makes a big difference.

Just listen to it. If it makes a farting, buzzing, or rattling noise, turn it down.

To the OP:The best option would be to get a couple of 8 ohm cabs. Not a lot of budget amps can go down to 2 ohms (your two cabs add up to this) so unless you're going for a PA power amp setup, you could benefit from changing your cabs for a couple of 410's.

Nothing wrong with the Mag300. I had one they sound great for the price. You need either one 4ohm cab or you can run one or two 8ohm cabs

Yeah, sorry. That was a weird question. Wound up settling on a different rig entirely on a whim, and went with a SansAmp RBI going to a 600w power amp. Thanks for clubbing me for my stupidity :P

If you did get that American Audio amp, let us know how it works out for you. There's not a lot of comment about those amps, here on TB.

I use an Ashdown MAG 300H (the EVO II's predecessor) and its a greta little head. The tone isn't out of this world or anything but it definitely gets the job done. Would definitely consider another Ahsdown head for my next one.

There's really not much to say, which is how I like it. I'm running my bass to the rackmount RBI to an American Audio VLP 600, and its simple. (Running it split to 300w a side right now so my cabs are running proper ohm ratings now ) It seems to be really clean, reliable power for whatever you put into it... The only little issue I've found in this unit was the weight (if I remember correctly)... I seem to recall pulling the unit out of the box and immediately commenting on the weight of the unit... But it is a tank of an amp. Low noise and reliable output. And its been knocked about a fair few times with little to no negative effect.
