Minimum Equipment for Medium Gigs

Sign in to disble this ad
I am switching over from drums to bass, so I don't know much about amps. I am looking for probably used equipment that is capable of filling medium sized bars and clubs, and competing with drums, playing hardcore/indie. What is the minimum wattage I can get away with, and what are some good heads/cabs to look for that can be had on the cheap? Thank you!

*What's your budget? You can buy some stellar used gear on the cheap if you scan the TB classifieds and local CraigsList.

*Will you have any PA support?

I personally would say 4-500w and a 410, but yet again all the medium sized places where i live all have full PA support, so i've never needed much.

YOu might want to check out these links to get a look at what your TB brothers are using for rigs:

1 Happy with my rig
2
Gig rigs

Micro-rigs of doom
Mini-rigs of doom
Rigs of doom
Cheap rigs of doom

Here's a link to an excellent CraigsList search engine. Search as far away from your home(on one screen)as you're willing to drive.http://www.searchtempest.com/

What's the max $$ to spend?

With the info you gave me off the top of my head I would say about 4-500 Solid State Watts, and a good 4x10 cab.

What kinda gear are the guitar players using?

Also, you might want to err on the side of having too many watts, as you stated that you wanted the bare minimum to get away with.

You can always turn it down some

I agree on the 4x10 or a pair of 2x10s. Again 5-600W should do you. Being an ex drummer coming into the light remember not to drool on the basses fingerboard!

My Peavey Tour 700 pairs perfectly with my Avatar 2X12. At 8 ohms, it's running 500 watts. I play in a loud hardcore band competing with high quality half stacks, and cut through really well.

Another good Craigslist search engine is www.statewidelist.com

Quick and easy to see things on Craigslist in your state and surrounding states.

It gives ebay results also if you are interested in those. Good Luck!

If you have PA support and quality monitors.. you don't need nearly as much as most follks normally say you do.

A bit depends if you have band mates that listen enough to blend with volume levels.
