Mix matched rig question

Sign in to disble this ad
For christmas I got some new cabs, a markbass 121p 2x10 and a markbass 151p 1x15. But, right now I still have my old acoustic b600h head, and thats what im using for the cabs. I get a killer bottom end, but when i slap on the top string, you can't really hear it when other people are playing. Would it make a difference if i got a new head? Like a markbass head? Or is mine sufficient?

Try turning up your tweeter,
Stack 2x10 vertically over the 15 axis,
Hope for the best.
It's unlikely your amp can't make a good sound. Try it with cabs individually.

To me it sounds like you have the bass knob turned up to much. Try balancing your strings with EQ. I doubt that you would need to switch heads to fix string balance.

What kind of strings do you use and how old are they (step 1). New round wounds will make slap stand out.

and search "mis-matched cabs" or "mixing cabs" for a whole bunch of reading.

you'd be better off trading the 15 for another identical 2x10.

I'd always recommend checking out the 2x10 pair or pair of 15's options but if 2x10 + 15 works then the oft quoted mismatched cab syndrome of phasing between cabs has not materialised for those particular cabs.

My own 15 + 2x10 goes great, the only reason I'd trade my 15 for another 2x10 is to save schlepping the mofo.

It is important to align the drivers on the vertical axis and audition from out in the room to give it a fair trial.

btw, 121P is a 1x12 with piezo, not a 2x10, so maybe we just talking about a potential buy anyway?

Yea 102p haha. I have Victor Wooten Sig Strings (.95-.40) I'm about to go to GC tomorrow to get a bigger set because those don't really cut it.

Going back to another previous question, how do you EQ your bass and/or amp?

Well i have a Classic Stingray 4 with the 2 band eq. So i keep the bass knob on max and the treble varies between half way and full. It's usually full when I slap. The head, The bass is at about 60%, mids are about 75%, and treble is 50%. So 10% boosted, 25% boosted, and not boosted.

Have you tried EQ'ing at the head or rolling off some bass? You're going to be using A LOT of your amps power on those lows. You're probably running out of steam trying to get all that low end and losing your perceived headroom. At least my guess.

I like little to medium tube amps so I need to conserve bass. Try doing what I do modified to fit your tone: set your amp's bass knob to flat. Turn your bass's bass knob all the way down and roll it back in until just after you first notice the low end sitting underneath it again. You'll still have noticeable lows but you won't be throwing all of your headroom at them.
