Mixing brands - Markbass to Laney?

Sign in to disble this ad
There is a Laney B2 enclosure for sale at a local board. It is missing the amp. My idea would be to install a LittleMark II in the space where the amp used to be. That would give me a mix-breed 2x10 combo with the option of hooking up a 1x15 if I need one.

I need advice on the sound of the speakers in the Laney -does anyone have any experience on this? How about a Laney Richter 1x15 that's also for sale on this board?

The seller is still making some measurements for me, it is possible that the space for the amp is too cumbersome to fit anything in there.

Anyway, if you know of any caveats, I would like to know. For instance, I don't know the ohms of the cab (not documented even in the downloaded manual).

That right there would kill it for me.

me too. a lot of inexpensive combos are made to operate at 4 ohms so they can use a smaller and cheaper amp. your lmii would work with it, but expandability would be out of the question if the cab for the combo is 4 ohms, plus you'd have to really watch your volume to keep from blowing the speakers with 500w. so make sure of the impedance before you plunk down dollar one.

Most combo amp speaker systems are rated to get the most out of the amp so typically 4Ω. That would negate the idea of adding a second cabinet. My other thought is that often combos are designed physically for looks and portability rather than good sound. I'm in agreement with our friend Mudd. I too would pass.

Thanks friends. I will still wait for answers to my questions from the seller. The thing is I have recently spent way too much on gear (and also sold some), and any opportunity where I could save and still get a great sound would be attractive. The starting point of this enclosure is a Laney B2, which is a 1500 W to 4 ohms capable rig so in this sense the speakers ought to be able to take the 500 W out of the LM II.

dont count on it. takes a lot of speakers to be able to handle 1500w. can't see a combo getting it done.

Theoretically, you could re-cone the cab with a known 8 ohm* speaker, but that pretty much kills the economic factor.

* Paul, how'd you make the 'ohm' sign? My keyboard doesn't have one.

It's a capital omega from the Greek alphabet. If you use Windows, it's available in Arial and Times Roman, among other fonts. Go to Accessories, then System Tools, then Charmap, and scroll down until you find it. You can then cut and paste it into your text.

This BB application doesn't have "Symbol" fonts, so I guess you can't do the ohm sign here.

In Word, the Symbol font on gives you the capital omega on the "W" key.

On the Mac it's Option + z to give you: Ω, option m: µ, option w: ∑ etc.

My old combo Laney RBG500 (1x15"+tweeter) was rated for 500 Watt @ 4 ohm but the speaker was 8 ohm (300 Watt) and the head had the output for an expansion cab.
When I bought a separate head (Parsek BS4000, now known as MarkBass) I took off the internal amp. and used it as 1x15 cab and it sounded great.

Regards,

Roberto

In the event that anyone is following, I tried to get an Eden 1x12 to work with my TH500, but the speaker in the second-hand cab was blown so I had to return it. I have sold the Markbass and the TH500 certainly will be adequate for this use. The seller of this Laney cab is still around, and after a delay has answered my questions. I may end up picking up the cabinet after all and fitting the TH500 in the amp space.

I had a Laney 1x15 Richter combo, the speaker was rated 8 ohm with an extension jack in the back so I could add a Laney 4 x10 which I picked up cheap, which was also 8 ohm.

When I bought my Eden head I sold on the combo, so bought a 1 x15 cab to keep the half stack setup, the Laney 1 x15 IS 8 ohm and sounds Bloody Great with the 4 x 10 and a 400W Eden amp! Go for it I say!

That's a shame...those are nice cabs.

Picked up the Laney 2x10 cabinet and it seems I can fit the TH500 and a Korg rack tuner in the same space. I need to do some metal bending to get the tuner to mount on the sides. There are some screws going from the top of the amp space down, where the original amp has once resided, so I can probably make a mounting bracket to hold the TH500. So the order of these two units will most likely be reversed.

The cabinet sounds pretty good. It is very punchy, and although the low end is missing depth, I can live with it in my rec room. There is a cheap Richter series 15" cab available as well, I will see what I will do with that.

I paid less than half of what the Eden cab would have been.

Here's the final installation. The tuner screwed right into the metal plates. Ugly but functional, sounds good but smells a bit funky (mouldy that is). Funky is good, right?
