Mixing Cab Manufacturers

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm in the process of reassembling a stage rig. I don't play out that often, but when I do, it is usually a festival-type setting, so I like a "big" rig. I've had success in the past with something that ends up with four 12" speakers....two 212's, one 212 and two 112's, etc. Also in the past, all of the cabs were made by the same manufacturer, and the same series (Aguilar GS or DB series, for example).

So to my question, would there be a notable difference if I mixed manufacturers? For instance, having an Aguilar GS212 and two Bag End S-12D's...or whatever the mix may be. I know this may seem like a silly question, but I was wondering if anyone has had any bad experiences with this.....other than mixing a high end cab with a cheap one, which I wouldn't do anyway.

It's not a problem as long as you have the correct load for the amp in the end.

Yep, I'm keeping that in mind. I think my preference is going to be the one 212 and two 112 route...just because it allows a little more flexibility. I'm probably going to end up with a 2 ohm load...with a 4 ohm 212 and two 8 ohm 112's.

If you are running a 2 ohm load, it is REALLY REALLY important to be sure your amp is rated to run at 2 ohms - otherwise, magic smoke!

No problems there....my amp will definitely go down to 2 ohms safely. In fact, at this point, it looks like I'll using a Mesa Big Block 750. I may end up with an Aguilar DB750 eventually, but I got such a good deal on the BB, I couldn't pass it up.

Whether or not it will sound good will be hit and miss, and if you are building a rig from scratch I see no good reason to mix at all.

I would get two or three identical cabs from the same manufacturer.

Not all 12's sound the same or have the same specs.

Mixing brands usually means mixing speaker models, and the results will be unpredictable.
