Mixing cabs of different ohms

Sign in to disble this ad
I know it's been asked about. But...... It just came up for me.
Can I put 2 cabs of different ohms ( 1 -4 ohm and 1- 8 ohm ) into the same bi-ampable head?
It's an Ampeg /w bi-amp capabilities.
How does that change the wattage?

If it's a stereo head, yes you can. The 4ohm cab could potentially get whatever it's rated at per channel at 4ohms and the 8ohm cab whatever it's rated at at 8ohms. Could also do it with a 2ohm stable mono head.

If it's bi-amp, then one cab will be lows and one highs (not stereo).

How the wattage changes is really dependent upon the amp. I would say try it, and see what your ears say.

By stereo I mean it has 2 channels like a PA poweramp. You could biamp it, sending lows to one and highs to the other or you could send a full signal to each channel. Each channel would then power one of the cabs. Reason being his 2 cabs chained together would make 2.67 ohms. Too low for a lot of stereo heads to bridge into.

Pardon my ignorance, but which heads have "bi-amp" capabilities? and do they have different controls for each channel? like being able to EQ the output to each cab separately? I'm asking b/c I just started a semi-related thread asking about my head/cab combination issues:

Amp/Cab issue(s)

(not to hijack THIS thread, sorry)

Is this a specific Ampeg model you're referring to, or is it a fairly common feature?

Mixing cabs of different ohms

The main reason I ask is a I found a great used Ampeg cab with an 18" speaker in it! Great shape and sounds very good with just a power head into it. But, I also have an SVT410-HLF cab to mix it with. It's 4 ohm. The 18" cab an 8 ohm.
Don't see too many 18" cabs now.
