MK500 compared to GP12smx trace elliot

Sign in to disble this ad
I have played ashdown gear for years now and have really loved it. However, I always wished that the ABM500 wasn't so dark and at one point owned the MK500 head. This head still had the great ashdown eq and was brighter but, it felt alittle stiff. I just recently bought a Trace Elliot GP12smx preamp and should have it in a few days. It has the same fet input as the ashdowns and same exact eq as the mk500 but, with the option of using a tube input stage. I have schematics for all of these pieces and can say that the trace and mk500 are almost identical in the basic preamp. My hope is that the trace preamp will keep the tone/eq that I like while the tube input gives me the feel back. Anyone have an experience with these two pieces? Tom Bowlus already gave his input on the Trace.
