moded guitar cab

Sign in to disble this ad
the other day i saw on craigslist an old marshal guitar cab with bass 12's in her. it went fast so i didn't get to have a go at her before some one snagged her up either for the cab or the speakers or maybe even as a bass cab don't know. what i was wondering all mighty 4 stringers of talk bass would a sealed 412 guitar cab with bass drivers sound good?

Tossing random drivers into a sealed cab is what gave Marshall the deserved reputation for making poor bass cabs in the 60s (the same applied to Fender).

Most likely not. Too weak in the lows for bass and too bassy, not enough topend and no breakup for guitar. I've gotten more than a few bass drivers off craigslist from guitar players who put them in their 412's for some wierd reason and didn't like it (go figure). Namely a pair of carvin ps12b's and most recently (yesterday), deltaliteII 2512's....woot. I'll never understand this but as long as they keep doing it, fine by me. A 412 guitar cab might be sized about right for sealed 10's.....might be.

Actually, maybe not even the 10's. Isn't a typical guitar cab about 1cu.ft. per? I think the ampeg box runs a little bigger than that. If you want a bunch of grindy mids and no bass you might like it.

well ill say this. a modded guitar cab aint a good idea however a good PA cab will do rather well.
my practace and main rigs both use PA cabs somewhere in them

I don't know where you live or how much music gear turnover there is but the key to getting decent stuff for cheap is watching craigslist, checking out pawnshops, etc., being patient and waiting for the right deal to pop up. Helps to know a bit about the stuff and be able to fix things too. You don't have to be an engineer or an amp tech but if you know a few things you're a step ahead of a lot of folks. Some stuff may just need a simple cheap repair or could be repurposed for other gear. A PA cab with a 15 in it that's at least 3cu.ft. or bigger can make a decent bass cab if you can get the right speaker in it. Some stuff just needs some cleaning or loose wires fixed up. Decent sounding older Peavey gear is abundant and cheap, etc.
