Modern, edgey-sounding tubes for svt-3 pro

Hey. I'm thinking about changing the tubes in my svt-3 pro. Can anyone recommend tubes with an edgier sound? Thanks guys.

I've found modern Chinese-production tubes to be fairly trebly. I'm guessing that's what you mean by edgy?

Honestly, the SVT-3 Pro isn't going to change a whole lot with a change of preamp tubes. The sound of that amp really has a lot more to do with the circuit design. In rolling tubes in mine, I noticed hardly any change at all.

What the amp does have, however, is a pretty flexible EQ. You always have the option of just dialing in a punchier sound on the front panel.

If you do want to experiment with tubes, try the first gain stage first as the effects of that change will be carried through and amplified by all the subsequent gain stages.

Hope you find what you're after!

I'd try using a Sansamp BDDI or similar.

I find swapping pre tubes to have a more subtle effect on tone. Depending on the amp, some differences are easier to hear than others. For example, in my Tmax, a cheap groovetube sound more trebly, more "open" than the Ss channel but with a less pleasing sound if you use the pre and post gain to overdrive it. Put an old Mullard in there and it becomes a little darker, thicker, but with a more pleasing dirt sound. On my sm400s, the differences were less obviously. An old GE-JAN sounds a little fuller/sweeter but not by much compared to a cheapy.

Can try different stuff but if one tube has a drastic different sound than another tube, something is wrong with one of those tubes.

Assuming the same tube type of course. Some amps you can put an AT7 or AU7 in place of an AX7 to get less gain/dirt, more clean headroom.
