Mono block

I'm considering making the jump to a rack mount system. What are your thoughts about using a high wattage mono block amp with a pre amp for EQ control. Am I even on the right track??

You're on the right track...but it may be tough to find a dedicated mono power amp. Most are stereo with bridging capabilities.

But, yeah...that will work just fine.

In fact, if you actually find a "high wattage mono block" power amp, let us know. It would be an interesting novelty.

One of the cleanest rigs I've ever had was with my Bryston monoblock amp. Lots of headroom!

There's also the Fender MB 1200. Of course, at this price, it seems more suitable to save money, buy something else, and just bridge the channels. Heck, a used Carvin B1500 would make for a good mono block and those are usually less than half the cost. It looks cool, though!

That thing weighs 92 lbs?!!

I'd take the Carvin B1500 at 35lbs, putting 900 watts into 8 ohms (1250 into 4, and 1900 into 2) for about $400 used...PLUS it comes with a built-in preamp.
