I was watching my friends' band set up for a dive gig. I saw three guys schlep three rigs, mess with setup, knob twiddle, etc, only to finish off with dropping modelling pedals down in front of them. this is what made me think of a good piece of entry-level gear that I think there would be a market for, and was wondering if it's been done, it seems to me it should have.
Has anyone put out a PA type head that has, maybe, 6 channel speaker output? for example you still need a cab for each guitar, bass or keyboard, but all the power is in one "instrument amp". maybe even 8 channels so (since the target market IS entry/budget) small gigs it could be vocals as well.
maybe it hasn't been done with success due to things needing to be HUGE by comparison to today's micros. Think about this: these fully functional 300 watt bass micros sitting "on their side" and lined up 6 or 8 across could be smaller than a vintage tube head, and probably lighter. why couldn't a single unit with basically 6 or more fully featured instrument amps capable of pretty good stage power (~ 300 watts?) be done?
i could see this requiring one seriously complicated and robust power supply, but does a piece like this make sense to anybody but me?
