MUDDY AMP?

Sign in to disble this ad
I own an Acuostic B200 combo amp, and as it seems with alot of cheap amps it gets muddy and somewhat distorted when turned up past a practice in an apartment level. I'm not pushing it that hard (volume on 5 or 6, gain on 3). I'm actually playing in the active input -10db just to combat the muddiness.

Could this be fixed by replacing the speaker with a higher quality one or buying a nice extension cab? Or is this a problem of the amp itself?

I like the the amp, it sounds pretty good and has nice features. Plus I don't have the money to buy a nice amp, so thats why i'm asking.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

you're probably just using all the power that the amp has. the -10 input will make it a bit cleaner, but it may also make the amp lose some highs and make it sound a little darker (more muddy?).

You say in the same post that your amp is "muddy", basically it doesn't sound good, but then you say it's a good sounding amp. Which is it really? I'm confused.

well your combo is what it is...a decent little amp not meant to rock out with a loud band. ultimately you're going to want something with more gas.

My Acoustic B200 has no mud at all, even with a tbird. All EQ knobs are at 12 oclock, with mids around 9/10ish, and the frequency around a 2 or 3 oclock position gives me a nice clean sound.

I tend to use the passive imput or passive imput selector on any amp I use because I like the sound better. Not quite as dark, a bit clearer sounding. If I need to, I just back off my bass volume or use hardly any pre amp. Ideally, my bass is full on and I've got a good amount of preamp gain, but I'd rather back off on the bass to stay in the passive setting on the amp.

I have a pair of the Acoustic b410 cabs and I'm running them with a DB750 so lack of power isn't an issue. They do tend to lose their character at high volumes, but I'm happy with their performance at the price point. When they blow up, I'll throw in some better speakers.

Try running the head into a different speaker or a different amp into your combo speaker and see how the sound changes at the the volume you are looking to use it for. Perhaps you just need a more powerful combo. Even the acoustic 600 isn't super powerful. It's 600 watt rating is at 2 ohms. So with an 8 ohm box or even a 4 ohm one it's not really that powerful.

A dynomite head/cab configuration that I've played was the Acustic Image Clarus+ with an AccuGroove Tri112 cab. The AccuGroove Tri110 would be another great cab option....OR, the "MiniGroove" cabs they recently came out with....check those out, fo sure. Acoustic Image does a 10-out of 10 job on their heads. Their cabs, however, are far more colored (what some consider "muddy") than something in the caliber of AccuGroove, Bergantino, or Glockenklang, or the like.... not to say that their cabs don't work well for people. They would be out of business if that were the case For a more transparent response, though, I would recommend the AccuGroove stuff.

Before I got a BDDI and VT Character Series, I had one of these. I'm not a Behringer fan, but it was cheap enough! Rather impressive, actually. I dialed the boomy/muddy sound out of there!

Made a big difference. Just an option.

Well, thank you all. Kinda sounds like I need a new amp.

Any suggestions under $500? New or Used.

GK's pretty decent...

but more importantly, if you plan on gigging w/ a rather loud rock band, you should at least look at something that pushes 350-500 watts @ 4 ohms, and speaker wise, at least a 4x10 or 2x12.

sounds like alot, but it help you handle any situation and give you the headroom, punch, authority, and tightness of sound amidst the barrage of guitars and drums.

you might have to go a bit past your budget, but craigslist is a beautiful thing.

Turn your notch knob all the way to zero. It worked wonders for me. Although it still isn't a great sounding amp IMO.
