Multi-Micros?

With their prevalence, is anyone taking two or three to gigs on a regular basis? Either as backups or as tone options?

Maybe a new venue with uncertain acoustics? Just curious, I only have one micro myself.

I have two second-hand micro heads, and bring both to gigs. One stays in my car as a spare. I've never been brought down by an amp failure in > 30 years, but I figure that a spare micro is cheap and easy insurance.

Yup. Never leave home without one.

I don't have a micro amp but yes, they'd make great backups (I bring backups for everything I can think of). Especially tiny stuff like GK's mb200. Cheap new, even cheaper used and will get you through the gig.

I thought these things would have more guys using combo's +/- extension cabs again as you can use properly designed cabs and stuff the micro head in there anywhere and only add 5lbs. but I guess fitting them in a gig bag pocket pretty much makes the combo thing unnecessary anyway. I still like Ibanez's Promethian idea of having a combo you can either chain a cab to, or yank the amp out and use it with big cabs.

I think that cabs have only begun to catch up with combo's in the lightweight department, and may now be threatened due to the neo shortage. But like you say, micro heads have made combo amps practically a moot point.

Good point.

That said, I've come up with some fairly light, easy to maneuver stuff that has heavy mag. drivers....at least in smaller 112, 210, 115 cabs, using better construction techniques. Stamped frame and 56oz. magnet isn't all that much when you get things like handles/wheels/balance/ergonomics right. The lighter but stiffer box more than offsets the heavier magnet. Same old, labor intensive runs up the cost thing though.

yup, multi-micros...

GB Neopak 3.5 (modded for 2 ohms)
GB Streamliner 900
MB LMII and F1
My first ever Pre/Power amp rig is so light and compact, I almost consider it one of my micros: Alembic F1-X pre/Crown XLS1500-Coredrive amp in a 4 space shallow Gator case is not a bear to haul around at all.

I played a outdoor car show last weekend in a town square park not expecting PA support. For the fun of it, I took my two GB Neox 212T cabs and instead of the usual pre/pwer amp I woulda used, I dusted off my Carvin B1500. What a blast it was using my P5 thru these two cabs, I forgot how nice n big the B1500 can get. Turns out I did get PA support afterall so it was twice as nice.

But I digress....yeah I use micro-heads.
