I’m spinning this thread off from another one that I had previously COMMENTED on. I’m starting this one because my posts took that one quite off topic from the original post. To reference the original thread: Music Man HD-130 stack conundrum
These Amps, over their years, had been produced in Multiple, subtle, variations, just trying to gather as much info I can on all the versions.
I’m merely Copy & Pasting my last post on the that thread, apologies for forcing you to reference that link for continuity.
From Previous Thread:
Great, getting somewhere on here (probably should’a started a new thread)! First, I bought my friend’s amp (mentioned above), that one, my previous two & one I picked up recently on ebay. I now have four HD-130 Reverb's (hey, they are Great Sounding Brickhouses). ALL different. My first question to anyone: I had heard that to differentiate Musicman’s first run from the Fender’s, the first year they were sold with BLACK Grille Cloth (I have found no evidence to support this, but am curious). Any Info?
That said, I have one Black Clothed Head, Tube Splitter, Parallel Out (if I can trust the labels, probably should open ALL of them) --- one Silver Clothed, Tube Splitter, Parallel Out --- one Silver Clothed, Tube Splitter, Series Out --- & one Silver Clothed, SS Splitter, Series Out (also on THIS version, the Standby Hi/Low switch is on the Front Panel and the Power Switch is on the Back, VS. all the other ones, on which the Power Hi/Low is on the Front Panel and the Standby Switch is on the Back.) ALL have the Silver Badge with Black Lettering (not to say that someone, at some point hadn’t changed things). I bought NONE of these new. Would really like to get a hold of other versions of the Schematics to cover them All. I have two schematic versions, One for the Tube Splitter Version showing Parallel Outs & one with the SS Splitter showing Series Outs. I’m not concerned with the fact that they are Series or Parallel, I just wanted to know if any of these had any other component or circuitry variations. At least one of the Amps HAS been tinkered with by someone, previously.
AMPTECH, are there any sources for QUALITY caps that you are aware of, these days, that you could share??? What method do you use to verify if they are indeed “leaky” (or symptoms you look for)? None of these blow fuses, but each one seems to have it’s OWN “Time/Temp/Tone” response curve (if that makes any sense), enough to suspect that things could still be better. Yeah, a good re-tubing might also be in order, I do have a Brand New set of Tung-Sols that I’ve “tried” in all.
Of note, NONE of them have ever left me silent and/or watching smoke, even though I have read that there is an issue (fatal) with the Tube Splitter design.
