My Acoustic B200 is chirping

Sign in to disble this ad
Here is my rig

Squire Vintage Modified Precession TB
Acoustic B200 with a 15" cab attached
Pedal board with some junk on it

I was playing and it all sounded fine. No farts, the preamp clip led wasn't blinking or anything. I always use my rig with particular settings.

For some reason tonight as i was playing i heard a high pitched whistle/chirp coming from my combos speaker, but not the cabs speaker. It only made this sound when the drummer hit his kick. I checked the tweeter button and it was off.

Can anyone elaborate?

Sounds like some forgot to glue one of the MDF panels in the cab.

It's what the cab is made of. If under warranty exchange it. If out of warr. then we can talk about flowing wood glue into the joints.

I had a few loose screws - well not me but the 10-inch speakers were on my B-450. It drove me nuts until I fixed it and then found out I had a loose spade connex on the lower driver too.

I fixed these myself since I don't want the 'factory' in them if I make improvements. I sent them a bill but they never responded.

Anyway - are you sure that you don't have 'jack-farts' or 'jack whistling' going on?

The unused jack port in the back of the cab can whistle and make funny noises if it's got air running in/out of it to help balance the cab pressures.

It's some place to start, but let me know what happens as I take a personal interest in things with the Acoustic name on them.

Well I had an extension cab plugged in.

I forgot to mention that when i had everyone stop playing it was making a high pitched hum. It sounded like something was burning in two. I turned the amp off and back on and it was gone.

To my ear the sound was something digital. Not something rattling or loose. Like i said it made the chirp when the drummer hit his kick for some reason. Is it possible that his kick was hitting and making something in the head touch? I thought it could be the vibration from the kick, but when i play it wouldnt make it happen.

That would indeed be unique if the kick could exacerbate an electrical connex of some sort - not impossible - just oddball.

Did you try diddling the Notch Filter to see if you could make better/worse?

Something electronic can of course be happening - but I'm still kinda lost here yet.

More input, please.

Burning in two would maybe sound a little more crackle-y I would think and of course, there's always smoke signals that go along with burning or fire of almost any kind.

Well no smells or smoke.

Its so weird. The thing is I turned it off then back on and had no problem any more.

I didnt fiddle with the notch cause i didnt think it would help. I have another practice tmw night. I will see if anything new comes up.

O another detail i can talk about is that only the combos speaker area was doing it, not the cab.

Well - make sure that the fan is running, and it should be at low speed when you first turn it on.

I've had mine get to a second fan speed, although I am not sure if it has more speeds or not from there.

Were the airways blocked? The top is the OUT vent and the rear is the Intake.

Mines the B200 combo. It only has the slits on the back for the fan

Ok my amp started doing it again, so i turned the volume down and unplugged my board and all. The sound was gone. I plugged my bass directly to it, and no hum noise. I plugged the board back in and it was there.

I switched out my patch cables and it was gone. One of the cables had a short in it i guess. Now to figure out witch one.

Yeah it was really scaring me. Id hate to fry the amp in the first year i had it.

If it did happen i would buy the B200h. Id just pick up another 15" cab to go with it.

O for fun here is my current amp configuration

What's that Ovation all about? I don't remember if you said or not - but what driver configuration is it? Remember - I'm old.

What were we talkin' about?

HEY! I see from your sig that you are #2 in a place that I want to join!

May be a misplaced piece of advice, but it's accurate!

I had a terrible thump-bang and generally bad vibrations when I had a couple of loose screws too. (Please don't go there)

I went and added stiff foam under the amp in the cab - just jam it in with a long thin screwdriver.

If you need to pull the amp for any reason, take the back corner cab protectors off too. They get in the way.

The amp goes out through the back after the top screws are out.

Just be aware that there are some wires that run out of the bottom of the amp to the speaker cab.

They are really quite long, but I disconnected them from their PC quick-connex jack when I got enough room to get my hands in there to do it.

This amp is heavy so be prepared!

Lol yeah. I bought the cab off a local shop for $75. It had some old speak in it that had no identification on it. It worked great for a few months then it jumped it voice coil. I put a Sica 15" speaker in it. It sounds amazing. If i ever blow out my speaker in the Acoustic ill replace it with a Sica.

O the club should be in the bass forum. I joined it a long time ago.

I will make sure the screws are tight. Thank you for the tip.

Thanks for the pic on the wires I will subscribe to this just for future reference.
