My Chinese Ampeg / Loud Tech nightmare

Sign in to disble this ad
Sooooooo......

Im doing a tour this summer with my main gig TIDES OF TANGIERS and I made the decision to work myself into a full Ampeg rig. My day job at the music shop affords me a pretty decent discount on new gear, so I decided to order an Ampeg SVT-CL and SVT-810e. There's been a lot of talk about the new Loud Technologies cabs actually being superior to the last few years run of SLM cabs in terms of build quality and hi-mid / treble response. So I ordered everything up.

I talked with our dealer rep from ON THE ROAD MARKETING, who is Ampeg's new marketing rep as of last month. He says "Yeah man those are in-stock and will ship today!"

Two weeks later the cabinet shows up. Sounds great. So good in fact I pass up a deal on another Bergantino NV610. Problem is, the order numbers don't match. This cabinet was a special order for a customer from weeks back, and I cant have it! I call the rep to find out where my order is. He says that he must have been "misinformed by the warehouse" as there are ZERO Ampeg SVT-810e's left in the entire country (excluding existing dealer stock, which I obviously cant get). I asked when the next shipment will reach the warehouse. He tells me that there have "been some problems" at the Chinese factory and as far as he can tell there wont be any more for AT LEAST 120 days, probably longer. Hooray for globalization.

So now I'm really up the river without a paddle. I can either go to a competing dealer and buy the gear for an extra several hundred dollars out of pocket, or wait and - A) hope that the next shipment actually does come, B) hope that when the cab does arrive it hasnt been assembled by the homeless insane rounded up from the streets by the factory to keep the line moving during the worker's strike and C) hope that when I take the cab out of the box I dont find a 10 year old Chinese worker sealed inside the cabinet by his parents to escape oppressive factory conditions....

Ampeg: You are a hot, stinking mess.

If you need it that bad and can't live without it, then go pay full price at another music store, and let the angst go. The important thing is getting the gear you want, right ?

That is why the newer Ampeg cabs are so much better. They're powered by 10 year old little kids. At the end of a well deserved gig, you better buy that kid a happy meal.

I've always wondered how many 10 year old slaves Ampeg and Phil Jones employ in China.

I live in China and in my experience, that boy will end up in the box due to a workplace mishap, not by any grand defection scheme.

I'd buy the Berg NV610 and call it a day .. at least it's an American made unit, and it will have a better resale value

I like that idea. Orange is like Ampeg, but dirtier.

so if you keep the cab, what are they going to do? send the cab police to your house? you ordered it, they sent it, period. if they ever did that to me, i'd tell them to bite it.

I'm with Jimmy on this - if Ampeg screwed the pooch by sending the cab to you, and you actually have possession of that cabinet...it sounds like Ampeg is out of luck on this one.

I'm pretty sure the cab did not get delivered to the posters home - it was delivered to the music store he works at. I am also assuming it did not come with his name on it.

His keeping it means that the store he works at has to screw over a paying customer that special ordered the cab.

How would you feel if a cab you special ordered weeks ago is not available because someone that works at the store decided they wanted it ?

If this happened to me with the company I do business with, they would say: "keep the cab" and then send me a $50 off or a !0% coupon on my next purchase. The fact that you work for the music store is a potential confict. Let the store get it to the correct customer. Then have them get one for you from one of other music warehouses. There is no shortage of these cabs, don't fall for that. Now the SvTCL is the main part of the order, did you get the correct head ? This is more important. . There are so many of those 810E's around, you can get one (used in good shape) real easy. +1 on THE CAB POLICE.........
