My Duratex project- FINISHED!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
So, a few months ago I purchased a used Peavey 412 TVX from the Guitar Center used site. I got a good deal on it $250, Although it is cosmetically beat up. If you look closely at the before pics, you can see the tolex peeling off at the bottom and on the sides. It had pretty much no tolex on the back and the casters would hardly roll. The cab sounds beastly, and it has all 4 original Sheffield speakers.

This is still a work in progress, but I wanted to let you guys see how I'm doing, lol. I wish I had taken better before pics, though. Anyways, here is the beginning. A single coat so far, and only a couple of sides completed. Here are some pics.

Looking good so far, looking forward to seeing it finished. I did my DIY rig in Duratex, love the finish...

Glad you boys are loving DuraTex. Any time you need anything, email me and I'll share what I know that may help.

I remember the Bad Old Days, spraying solvent-based Texturelac...
If I had a pressure assist on my HVLP gun, I'd try spraying Duratex again, but the excellent results I got from rolling, don't give me much incentive to do so.

And, the cat isn't attracted to it!

And finally, its finished!
Is it perfect? No.
Would I do some things differently next time? Yes.
Am I satisfied with the end result? Hell to the yeah!!

It's true that its all in the prep work. Me being me, I was impatient, lol. Plus I did this in a spare bedroom, without all the proper tools. But overall, I think it turned out fantastic.
I can tell you this: screwing in the bolts for the casters by hand sucks big time, lol. Not one power tool was used in this project. I'm poor, what can I say, Lmao. I used gloss paint on the corners and grill cuz that's what I had laying around. When I get some $$ ill prolly just order some new corners.
As far as the Duratex goes, man this stuff is easier to apply than paint, and it really did come out fantastic. I used about one and a half of the $20 sample kits. I applied 2 coats and still have plenty left if touch ups are required in the future. I used the 4" roller for all of it. Even though this is a big cab, the small roller worked perfectly. If you think you need the 9" roller, you don't.
Oh yeah, another thing I should have done is go get all new screws. Just cuz, lol. Here's the pics.

I think that looks great! I wish cabinet manufacturers would just make all their cabinets with that finish. I bet it would be easier/cheaper (don't really know the cost of the DuraTex) for them to do that instead of applying some type of covering.

Definitely a big improvement! Duratex is an excellent product to re-do any mangled cab.
