Question My MTI Ampeg V7 head: a couple of questions

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys !

I've owned an 80's MTI era japan made Ampeg v7 head for a couple of years now. I use it for bass and just retubed it with 6550's. Coupled with a 2x12 eminence-loaded bass cab it sounds terrific !

But the problem is, I picked it up in the US so the transformer is a 110v only. I got pretty tired of always carrying around an external 220v to 110v transformer (I live in Europe) so the most practical thing to do would be to change the internal transformer to one that supports 220v or both.

My questions now :

- Which transformer would suit my head ?
- The back pannel is missing and it bothers me a bit. What are the dimensions of v4 back pannels ? These are the only ones on fliptops.net that would seem to match.
- I don't have the footswitch, where could I find a compatible one ?

I know it's dangerous to poke around in amps, I'm not gonna try, I'll take it to an amp tech. But maybe I could save a couple € by buying the thing off the internet.

Thanks guys !

Here's some amp-p0rn :

nice blurry picture.

check the dimensions, see if they match up. As to the transformer, it would be possible to get it rewound, get in touch with some local amp techs and see if any of them are up to it.

Here's Bruce's answer :

"Hi,
I don't have the specs to make you a new tranny with 220v operation and dont' know which existing ttranny will work..
If you have a pic of one with a back panel and your opening dimensions we could make you one.
Bruce"

2 choices for the footswitch.

1) find schematics/pinouts online and use them to adapt another footswitch to work with the head.

2) find a v7/v3 online or in a store with a footswitch, buy it, and sell one of the amps.

They are that hard to find. Google can provide some help, you will need to wade through some unhelpful crap but the info is out there. I've found it for my own V7, but never made the switch as I sold the amp. For the same reason I no longer have the information, just remember that I did find it.
