My predicament, GK content...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Guys,
I have a GK 400RBIV in need of repair and cleaning. most of the pots crackle when the knobs are turned. I tried to remove the top of the amp to clean the inside but one of the screws was put in so tight I damaged the top of the screw. The left speaker jack is loose, my speaker cable (Monster) was actually stuck in the jack and it looked like it was corroded. Funny, the amp has only left my house once. Anyway, I called GK since there aren't any GK service center here in VT. I will have to pay for shipping to and back from GK, plus a $75 bench fee. This isn't including parts. I think i only paid $350 for the amp, I bought it new from MF. What would you do? I mean I like the amp. I guess I have to ask myself if I love it, right? I guess i could sell it as is, it certainly works OK.Decisions, decisions.
Brent

- How to remove stripped screws
- Snug the speaker jack (and the others as well)
- Stop using Monster cables
- Clean the pots with CAIG DeoxIT

With an amp that old I'd find a local repair shop if it actually needs any soldering.

I've got a local guy who will do old transistor amps for 50-100 bucks in most cases. GK will almost surely send you a schematic on an amp that old. Once you've got a schematic almost any electronics guy can do work that's needed.

That said, it probably just needs some TLC

just hope they are better than my local repair shop which is a GK repair place BTW. worse experience Ive ever had with service. guy was a religious nut trying to convert my wife to his religion when she dropped it off, then tried to charge her for the work though it was warrantied. she had to threaten to call the cops to get my amp back.

This is news to me. What's wrong with Monster cables?

In addition to being absurdly overpriced many also have oversize plugs that can get stuck in jacks, or not fit at all.

Good to know. Thanks for the info. At the risk of hijacking this thread: what's a good, reasonably priced instrument cable?
